Mission Statement The Mission of Glory House Services (GHS) is twofold: first, to be a resource for Haitian immigrants in Kansas City, facilitating their transition into and success within American society; and second, to promote strong communities and improve standards of health and education in rural Northwest Haiti.
Background Statement Glory House Services (GHS) is a nonprofit organization created to help meet the needs of Haitian immigrants  as they transition into the local community. GHS provides translation/interpretation services to new Haitian immigrants  as requested. GHS participates in KC area ethnic fests and  the Greater KC Ethnic Enrichment Commission by participating in events around the KC area  representing Haiti, culminating in the Ethnic Festival held in Swope Park. For seven years  at two schools in NW territory of Haiti, GHS have paid teachers salaries. This increased to three schools in 2014. 
Impact Statement
Glory House Services is an organization designed to improve the transition of newly arrived Haitian immigrants to the United States.  This is accomplished through interpreter/translations services for people in Kansas City area and assisting them in accessing  social services in Kansas City.  Glory House Services also has a primary role in educating children in the Northwest Territory of Haiti.   
 
Accomplishments in 2014: 
  • Doubled our Board and added volunteers willing to help with events and fundraising.
  • Created new partnerships with American Association of Family Physicians in Kansas City and Non-Profit Connect.
  • Taught 3 Haitian Creole Classes in conjunction with UMKC's Communiversity Program.
  • Appointed to the Ethnic Enrichment Commission by the Kansas City Mayor's office to represent Haiti.
  • Co-sponsored the 2nd annual Haiti Symposium with more than 70 participants 
  • Increased number of schools supported in Northwest Haiti from two to three (Fond-Poux, Collin, Repos)
 
Goals for 2015 / 2016:
  • Increase community interest in Creole language Classes
  • Increase funding for Teachers and Staff in Northwest Haiti
  • Increase funding and access to educational materials and supplies for each school in Northwest Haiti.

Needs Statement
  1. Financial support in paying salaries for 16 teachers and 3 principals for 3 communities in NW section of Haiti at $11,782.
  2. Fund school supplies and educational materials for the schools where 280 students are enrolled in the three schools. $1,000 US dollars per school can reach far in Haiti.
  3. To fund the purchase of building materials so community members of Haitian school children can construct school benches at the respective sites in Colin, Repos and Fond-Poux.
  4. Add 40 more people attending Creole classes at UMKC which builds cultural awareness.
  5. Acquire two new partnerships with KC area social service oriented programs for  translation/interpretation services.

This past year, GHS has been very successful in widening its volunteer base, creating new partnerships, and reorganizing the board and our projects through more frequent meetings.  Still, we face some challenges. Though we have secured some help for writing grant proposals, lack of funds remains an immediate problem.  To remedy this problem, we have taken several steps. Multiple fundraisers, hosting a bingo fundraising event, a couple of Zumbathon activities, Haitian coffee sales, an Haitian food/lemonade sales at the KC Ethnic Fest. This past year we had our first direct mail solicitation. These will help increase funds, either for our local projects or for projects in Haiti. Through our new partnership with Non Profit  Connect we won a website makeover  which will help us raise awareness about GHS and about the situation in Haiti. We also have an ongoing relationship with AAFP  to which we provide translations services at an hourly rate.  We also hope to recruit more volunteers and partners. Another challenge is simply the difficulty of getting things done efficiently in Haiti. Transportation there always slows down our work and obtaining licenses from various government offices (to build etc.) can be frustrating, expensive and time-consuming. However, by connecting with other volunteer organizations and helping each other out, we hope to ease our transportation difficulties in future trips and make the connections necessary to proceed with our projects at a quicker pace. We do not let such challenges discourage us and always keep our mission and goals in mind when we are faced with problems!
Programs
Description At UMKC located in Kansas City, Mo, 4-5 times a year, classes are offered on 6 consecutive Saturdays in Haitian Creole, which is the predominate language in Haiti. The classes provide a language book, adult students keep. Instructors are Haitian. On "graduation" day there is Haitian food to be eaten- to bring the culture "home". Poetry and songs can be part of the lessons for interested participants. Some of the former students were part of medical or religious mission trips, as well as the curious and those wishing to adopt a Haitian child.

Short-Term Success

Already mentioned is to build attendance for 2015 alone by 40 more attendees. It is from attendance that GHS finds volunteers that are willing to assist in community project like the Kansas City Ethnic Fest, assist with fund raising, donating and even identify adventurers to travel to the NW territory of Haiti as witnesses to struggle of dignity and life.

Long-Term Success
Knowledge though information/language sharing is key to advocacy.
  • To build Glory House Services (GHS) there needs to bring  a social consciousness about the Haitian people, its history etc.
  • To build awareness, GHS needs to build attendance at the language classes held at UMKC.
  • Long term attendance would involve at least 150 more attendees to these classes over minimally 3-5 years. 
Program Success Monitored By

Success is monitored by tracking attendance at classes held at UMKC, per session and for cumulative sessions per calendar year.

A second measure is by building the e-mail listing of student attendees for the organizations data base. It is from this tool, notices are sent out regarding different events with which GHS is affiliated. This increases information sharing and participation.

Examples of Program Success

A simple example: a person enrolled in the class as part of graduate school in "community development" attended the creole language classes, which introduced that person to GHS director and volunteer staff. This introduced him to the work, the mission of the organization and now is a active member of GHS.

People who have attended and have maintained contact with GHS and GHS with them number in the 100s. They may be donors, members of mission trips for opthomologists, teachers, religious programs. 

Description GHS is a participant of the Greater Kansas City Ethnic series of festivals which culminates with the Kansas City celebration held in Swope Park each year, along with dozens of other ethnic groups.  GHS was appointed to the Ethnic Enrichment Commission by the Mayor's Office to represent Haiti. Throughout the year there are small ethnic groupings at area high schools, museums, wherein a cultural exchange is had.

Short-Term Success Measuring short term is challenging. People who stop to ask, for example, "How is the recovery from the Haitian earthquake of 2010 progressing?" or to ask "Exactly where is Haiti?" lacks attribution to success. A measure can be premised total attendance to such events-although GHS Haitian booth and sales is but a part of the larger celebration of world cultures.
Long-Term Success Long term success has been measured with the Swope Park Festival by number of food items sold, be it "red beans and rice', Haitian lemonade, packages of Haitian coffee sold. In 2014 the expectations were exceeded in which GHS nearly ran out of food and lemonade. Sales of packaged coffee was brisk. In 2015 measures will be more precisely tabulated.
Program Success Monitored By Success will be monitored this year -2015 by sales, brochures picked up by attendees and by people who sign-up to receive GHS bulletin e-mail blasts.
Examples of Program Success Food Sales at the Swope Park Ethnic celebration will be a key measure of exposure to the citizens of Greater Kansas City. Sign-ups with people's e-mails will be counted. Brochures available and picked up will be counted.
Description

GHS operates by a board of directors, applying Robert's Rules of order, with the broad goal of supporting elementary education in three communities in NW Haiti. We started as an ad hoc group of volunteers. There are no  salaried nor paid positions. (By ad hoc we mean formed for a particular purpose without consideration of wider application.) But  the application is broadening as we begin working with community partners in the communities of Colin, Repos and Fond-Poux, including parents of school children attending GHS schools, and other community members.The program provides salaries to 16 teachers and three principals. The Haitian youth are taught by "certified" Haitian teachers. (In Haiti- adults with 12 years of education can be certified- their baccalaureate.) This certification is done by the country's department of education.

Approximately half of all school eligible children do not attend any school for lack of classroom, teachers, books, essentially everything. GHS addresses the fundamental needs- through fund-raising. Teacher salaries, cloth purchases so Haitians can make children's uniforms, , books in French and world maps, paper/pens- Basics!

Given the state of education in this country, wherein Haiti has the lowest literacy rate of the Caribbean and Central America, literacy proficiency is paramount.

Short-Term Success Naturally, to be taught, to be tested, a record of attendance is maintained at all three schools. Girls outnumber boys and attendance, thus far in 2015, the attendance of girls is also better than the boys enrolled in the schools. These records are valuable, in setting an accountability of students and in turn their parents/family.
Long-Term Success The three schools keep records of testing results and students who are promoted to the next grade based of testing approved through the department of education in Haiti. Testing takes place minimally three times a year.

Examples of Program Success

Not unlike other countries, being promoted to the next higher grade, involves a level of proficiency in subject matter/material covered.

Because Haitian Creole is the primary language of the people, by learning French, students have exposure to the language of business, banking and civil government. They will be able to more deftly be able to navigate  the morass of paperwork in getting jobs.

What is certainly missing is advanced education once students complete the sixth grade. What the students do have is a foundation upon which to build.
CEO Comments The President and Board of Directors shall present at each annual meeting a full and complete statement of the business and affairs of the corporation for preceding year. GHS is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes and activities that fall within the provisions of the IRS Code, Section 501(C)(3). The specific purpose of this is to help to stabilize the Clients in the Greater Kansas City Community. Also after-school/tutoring programs, cultural awareness class, and employments/like skill training provide access to other resources needed to aid self-sufficiency.

Experience
Idalbert Joseph is a native Haitian who has lived for ten years in Kansas City. Together with his cousin MackLey Altema, our President, co-founded Glory House Services in 2007. He maintains active contact with family and educators in Northwest Haiti.
 
Idalbert has become a vital resource to the Kansas City Haitian community, linking immigrants with needed social services, assisting with Creole translations, teaching Creole to English speakers for the past two years through Communiversity  on campus at UMKC- Univ. of Missouri in Kansas City. 
 
He also serves as a role model in his community for the achievements possible for a new immigrant to the US.  Besides holding a full-time job, being active at his church, and, along with his wife, raising three children, he has volunteered at Children's Mercy Hospital as a Pathfinder since 2006.

Idalbert Joseph holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Information Systems from DeVry University, Kansas City, Missouri.

Collaborations
GHS enjoys partnerships with many organizations, churches, and businesses in the Kansas City Area.  We deeply appreciate the chance to collaborate with all of the following groups:
 
Rockhurst University--provided volunteers who helped renovate and paint our headquarters; provided volunteers who teach ESL, computers, and Spanish; instructed our community members on good health habits during an informational health seminar; donated computers to our computer lab, is supporting our symposium on improving efficiency of non-profit operations in Haiti.

Heart to Heart International--we are assisting with English to French and English to Creole translations of medical training and Standard Operating Procedures that are used to train Haitian health care workers.
 
Westport Coffeehouse -- donates their venue for us to use for meetings and fundraisers
 
The Kansas City Library -- donated books for ESL students and computers for our computer lab; instructed community members on how to obtain a library card and use library resources.
 
The Kansas city Mayor's office for its selection of GHS on the city's Ethnic Enrichment Commission.

CEO Comments We are very small, but it takes very little money to make a difference in our rural area of Haiti. They area towns/villages without roads, without electricity, without water purification. It is not visited by the many NGOs in Haiti who focus instead on Port-au-Prince and other large communities.

GHS has two goals in 2017.
 
The first, in conjunction with our goal of supporting education in very small, rural communities in northwest Haiti that have not been visited by NGOs, is begin discussions within the community for portable water at the schools. We have increased the salaries to $55 a month in 2016.  
 
The second goal, in conjunction with our mission of assisting Kansas City Haitian immigrants, is to formulate a sustainable plan for connecting area Haitians with existing health care,  and legal services with translation/interpretation services. This project requires volunteer time spent finding existing organizations who provide advocacy services, having minimal financial resources.
 
The two goals are complimentary. Through volunteer participation, we raise awareness of needs in rural Haiti with minimal expenses, and with our money, we support teachers in extremely rural communities who are educating Haiti's children without creating an expensive non-profit infrastructure.
 
It is the presence of Haitians, on the board, the advisory board, in-country, and in the Kansas City community that allow us to be effective with a very small budget.
