Mission Statement

All students will learn and achieve at high levels if given the opportunity. KIPP KC’s mission is to create schools that empower students to develop the knowledge, skills and character traits necessary to succeed throughout their education and in the competitive world beyond. Great education transforms lives. KIPP KC is a tuition-free, public charter school open to all students in Kansas City. We know that our KIPPsters will someday be able to build a better tomorrow for themselves, for their communities, for us all.

Background Statement

In 1994, David Levin and Michael Feinberg, two young public school teachers working in Houston, Texas, were unwilling to accept the low expectations and poor academic results that plagued the low-income students they served. They designed an innovative model that would ultimately change the conversation about public education. They called the program KIPP – or the Knowledge is Power Program – and demonstrated that their teaching strategies could in fact close the achievement gap with their students. In 2007 that program was brought to Kansas City.

Currently, there are 200 KIPP schools across the country serving over 80,000 students in 20 states and the District of Columbia. KIPP continues to serve the children most in need, those who are traditionally underserved by public schools in our nation’s most disadvantaged communities. Our latest results show that 82% of students who completed the eighth grade at a KIPP school go on to college. KIPP alumni are graduating college at rates that exceed the national average across all income groups and at more than four times the rate of the average student from a low-income community.

KIPP Endeavor Academy opened with approximately 36 fifth grade students in 2007. Today, KIPP Endeavor is a kindergarten through 8th grade school serving 420 students during the 2016-17 school year. KIPP Endeavor has created a powerful, urgent, learning and teaching environment that helps each student and adult to be their best self every day. Expanding KIPP's reach in Kansas City began with adding lower grades to KIPP Endeavor Academy this year and we will continue in the coming years.

In addition to expanding to elementary grades at Endeavor next year, KIPP KC plans to hire and train two new school leaders over the next two years and open additional K-8 campuses in 2018-19 that would serve more than 750 students. Additionally, we hope to open a high school campus, ideally in 2019-20 that would serve more than 700 KIPP K-8 alums and other students from across Kansas City.
Impact Statement

KIPP KC’s founding school, KIPP Endeavor Academy, is a K-8th grade school serving 420 students during the 2016-17 school year and will continue growing to serve over 800 students from kindergarten through 8th grade.

Through collective hard work and commitment, KIPP students complete college at a rate that is above the national average for all students and four times higher than that of students from similar economic backgrounds.

KIPP Endeavor Academy has created a powerful, urgent, learning and teaching environment that helps each student and adult to be their best self every day. We are working to grow our organization from a single school into a regional network. Expanding KIPP's reach in Kansas City began with adding lower grades to KIPP Endeavor Academy this year school year and will continue until we are a full K-12th grade region serving around 3,000 students in Kansas City.

Accomplishments:
  • KIPP KC opened elementary grades at KIPP Endeavor Academy for the first time this year.
  • KIPP Endeavor Academy currently has a waitlist in all grades
  • KIPP Endeavor Academy is serving more students than ever before
  • KIPP Endeavor has outperformed the Kansas City Public School District in Reading and Math on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) test for the past four years.
Needs Statement
  1. Unrestricted financial support – KIPP Endeavor receives only about 75% of the funding that the traditional public school receives.
  2. Capital Funding - KIPP KC successfully purchased our building at the corner of 18th and Prospect. Ownership was the first step. Now, it is time to renovate. During the summer of 2017, we plan to tackle some of larger renovations.  Over the next few years, KIPP will transform our building at 18th and Prospect into a school building our students, neighborhood, and city will be proud to call their own. KIPP KC gets fewer dollars per pupil than traditional public schools and must either raise the funds for, or finance, school buildings.

KIPP KC anticipates spending the following amounts to renovate our building and create the school our students deserve:

  • $500K BLUEJAY GYMNASIUM - Currently, KIPP KC students are unable to play a “home game” because our gym has concrete floors and exposed air ducts.
  • $150K CAFETERIA & MAIN CORRIDOR
  • $150K WELCOME CENTER
  • $100K WINDOWS
  • 4 GRADE LEVEL PODS AT $50K EACH - We must begin reconstructing our layout to create "pods" for grade levels to use as meeting areas and to center classrooms around.
  • $30K CLASSROOMS (EACH) - The current layout of the building will not support our expansion plans and additional classrooms are required.
  • $25K THE “GRIND” ROOM - a Crossfit style workout room for our middle school students.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
KIPP Endeavor Academy has leveraged the strength and resources of the national KIPP network to develop as a school.  As a national network of charter schools, KIPP provides a blueprint for what success can look like in urban schools.  At KIPP Endeavor Academy we are able to provide rigorous professional development to support our teachers, staff, and administrators.  Our current staff is completely dedicated to creating a learning environment where all students can succeed.  KIPP Endeavor alumni enrolled in high-performing high schools are role models for current students and proof that KEA's hard work and "whatever it takes" mentality pay off.
Challenges:

KIPP Endeavor faces several current challenges, including a funding gap.  As a charter school, we receive less - approximately 75% - of the funding granted to traditional school districts.  Therefore, we rely on partners and donors to help raise additional funds in order for us to continue to provide an outstanding college preparatory education.

Within the KIPP Endeavor Leadership Team we have developed a facilities committee to address our growing needs as a school.  Together we are looking for a permanent home for KIPP in Kansas City.

Other immediate challenges include establishing a short- and long-range plan for the oversight of the school’s academic success, financial stability and growing the number of urban students we serve. A strategic plan is being developed to address each of the above. In the meantime, monthly board meetings include the school administration presenting academic performance, financial results, and fundraising efforts in an executive level dashboard format. The Board continues to build our human capital pipeline by seeking people with a passion for improving urban education to serve on committees and potentially as future Board Members.

Description
At KIPP, teachers, students, and families are all united around the same goal: college and a choice-filled life. We believe that an excellent college-preparatory education will set students up for success in whatever life path they choose. Through collective hard work and commitment, KIPP students complete college at a rate that is above the national average for all students and four times higher than that of students from similar economic backgrounds.
KIPP KC’s founding school, KIPP Endeavor Academy, is a K-8th grade school serving 420 students during the 2016-17 school year and will continue growing to serve over 800 students from kindergarten through 8th grade.
KIPP KC welcomes students from zip codes across Kansas City and specifically focuses on bringing the opportunity for quality education to those students living in areas without access to high-performing schools.

Short-Term Success Seeing the academic growth of our students in such a short amount of time show that the program is well on its way to success. In just our first year, our students made nearly two years of academic growth in all subjects. Our students identify themselves with the year they will enter college, rather than the year of school they are in currently. In just the first four months of school, our KIPPsters averaged almost a year and a half of growth on the Language assessment and more than a year in math according to the Northwest Evaluation Association.
Long-Term Success KIPP was founded with the idea that all students can and will learn with the right motivation, the right support at home and at school, and an understanding of the challenges they face. KIPP Endeavor Academy is successful when our students are accepted into college preparatory high schools, and from there, matriculate to college and graduate.
Program Success Monitored By
Success is measured in results. From academic growth rates to attendance success, KIPP Endeavor is starting to see growth and success. Using annual testing, such as the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) and the NWEA testing system, as well as periodic growth testing throughout the school year, we are able to measure our academic results in a systematic way, and compare them to other schools in the area and across the country.

The KIPP Through College Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that our students are placed in college preparatory high school programs after they advance from KIPP in the 8th grade.  The KIPP Through College program will support KIPP Endeavor alumni until they graduate from college.
Examples of Program Success
Over the past four years, our students outperformed the Kansas City Public School District on the MAP (Missouri State Assessment test) in both Reading and Math.

As most students enter KIPP Endeavor an average of three years behind, typical growth of one year is not enough. In order for all students to reach the 75th percentile, the KIPP Foundation developed “Tiered Growth” targets based on a student’s starting quartile and typical growth score. The term “Tiered Growth” reflects the heightened expectations we have established for students at KIPP Endeavor and is aimed at helping our students reach the 75th percentile on the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress exam and therefore demonstrating that they are on track for college readiness. Last year, an average of 51% of our students met or exceeded their Tiered Growth Targets in Math and 47% met or exceeded their Tiered Growth Targets in Reading.
CEO Comments KIPP is transforming urban education around the country, and it has the same potential here in Kansas City.  We offer extensive additional programming like longer school days, months and years, student access to teachers in the evening, out-of-state field lessons for students, as well as high school placement and alumni support, which significantly increase our budget.  With the support of the Kansas City community, we can create more seats for more students in great schools in Kansas City.
