Mission Statement KCMETROPOLIS.org publishes online substantive, critical, unbiased review, preview and side-story articles on the traditional and independent arts to help promote, make accessible and educate the general public about Kansas City's rich arts environment.
Background Statement

For the past nine seasons, KCMetropolis.org (KCM) has filled a clear and urgent need in coverage of the arts in the Kansas City Metro area. In this new environment of disappearing traditional avenues for arts coverage, KCM has continued to thrive and grow in content and in readership. We have helped make a direct and critical positive impact on ticket sales for arts organizations by making information easily accessible for the general public both onsite and through our frequent use of social medias.

KCM was formed as a nonprofit service organization – a free online arts journal - to help educate and inform the public through interviews, previews, reviews, news, and calendar listings of performing arts events. We publish weekly on Wednesdays and have an archive of over 6,500 articles since our debut issue on October 5, 2008. Working in partnership with other arts organizations, arts purveyors, arts councils and tourist-based companies, KCM has expanded coverage this season, and has stepped up local and regional Arts News coverage offering important updates on the state of the arts economy.

Impact Statement

KCMETROPOLIS.org (KCM) was created in July 2008 as an arts service organization to fill an essential need in the community for definitive performing arts coverage in the face of decreasing coverage from the more traditional print media. Our goal is to make a positive impact on awareness, attendance and ticket sales - and, in turn, to help make a positive impact on the local arts economy.

Top Realized 2016 Goals:
  1. As of December 2016, we have published over 6,500 articles – all archived on-site. a virtual memory bank of significant arts events in our fantastic community.
  2. A new ‘look and feel’ of the website was completed in February 2016 to make the website more modern-looking and more easily navigated.
  3. Readership continues to grow, and we now have 25,000+ onsite each month.
  4. All arts organizations use KCMetropolis reviews/previews in their regular promotions. We are the largest arts media in the Kansas City metro area.

2017 Goals:
  1. Increase funding to retain writers and editors. After 8 years of part-time senior staff, the Executive Director/Publisher has moved to full time to help increase funding and earned revenues, and also to participate more fully in the community.
  2. Build more partnerships within the arts community to increase coverage of the arts.
  3. Continue to increase readership, and therefore awareness of the arts to continue to positively impact ticket sales.
Needs Statement

After 8 years of part-time senior staff, the Executive Director/Publisher has moved to full time to help increase funding and earned revenues, and also to participate more fully in the community. We need to fund this position in order to grow our services. We also need funding for operations, and pay for editors and writers.  Writers are extremely dedicated, but it is imperative that we continue to pay regularly. Some technical updates to the website.

Long-Term Success

Increased awareness, accessibility and education about the performing arts in Kansas City. Direct impact on ticket sales for the arts organizations.

Ultimately success will be measured, too, by increased attendance and tickets sales for the arts organizations.

These organizations have expressed their gratitude to KCMetropolis.org for its ability to fill the gap in arts coverage in the city.
    CEO Comments

KCMetropolis is a labor of love for all involved.  We (as artists, musicians, teachers, arts-lovers) are very concerned about the shifting role of the arts in mainstream culture. And with the shift (and disappearance) from traditional print media to the Internet have been proud to be forerunners in this new media. KCM has continued to thrive despite the collapse of several contemporary online journals that were not able to survive the dismal funding scenario. The dedication of the writers, editors and Board of Directors is a true testament to the passion of this project. However, we are not able to retain writers for the long-haul with no funding. KCM has an affordable sponsorship functionality and this revenue stream has grown slowly over the past seven years – with commitments for next season already booked. However, ad sales are only a small part of the needed revenue stream and we do need some foundations to see the incredible merit of this project and invest in us.
