Mission Statement

Nonprofit Connect links the nonprofit community to education, resources and networking so organizations can more effectively achieve their missions.

Background Statement
In 1971, John Shehane led the formation of a local chapter of the National Society of Fundraisers. By 1974 the chapter had dissolved but a group of ten continued to gather and in 1975 formed a new organization, the Greater Kansas City Council on Philanthropy. Unlike today, Council by-laws did not encourage all segments of Kansas City's philanthropic community to become members. Funders, volunteers, consultants and businesses were conspicuously absent.  In 1983, a telephone JobLine was established. In 1985, the first Philanthropy Awards Luncheon was held to enhance community awareness of the fundraising profession and promote understanding of philanthropy. In 1991, the Council launched Kansas City Philanthropy newsletter (later known as Voice of Philanthropy), the only print publication in GKC dedicated to covering the nonprofit sector until 2009 when it was absorbed into the Link Weekly e-newsletter. In September 1993, the Council initiated a major educational program, the September Seminar, later known as the Philanthropy Midwest Conference and now the Nonprofit Solutions Conference. In 1998, the Council launched its website, then known as KCPhilNet, and JobLink went online. A few years later, the Council began offering an Online Foundation Directory for members only. In 2006, KCPhilNet was relaunched with a new look, an updated Foundation Directory and other new tools and resources. In 2008 the Council’s board, after conducting focus groups and surveys, voted to change the organization's name to Nonprofit Connect: Network. Learn. Grow. Several organizations merged into Nonprofit Connect over the years, including the Clearinghouse for Mid-Continent Foundations (2002), the Community Association of Nonprofit Business Executives (CANBE), the Nonprofit Communications Network (2008) and the Volunteer Center of Johnson County (2010). Nonprofit Connect held a capital campaign from 2011 to 2014 to expand programming, establish a permanent office and training facility, add staff and implement a new organizational membership structure. In 2012 Nonprofit Connect launched a new membership structure providing benefits to all member organization employees, and in 2017 we will offer more than 95 educational and networking programs annually serving over 600 members representing over 5,000 individuals.
Impact Statement

2016 ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  1. We ended 2016 with 643 members, which translates into approximately 5,000 nonprofit professionals, board members and volunteers, as well as businesses and funders, receiving membership benefits.
  2. Nonprofit Connect engaged 5,280 nonprofit professionals with 95 educational programs in 2016. We continued to expand and develop programs for advanced professionals, including adding a Human Resources for Nonprofits series and Advanced Volunteer Management Institute. Because of program sponsorship, over 50% of programs offered were free for members.
  3. 2,918 nonprofit jobs, board positions and internships were posted on our nonprofit job board, JobLink, in 2016. 
  4. 91% of nonprofit members surveyed feel like membership with Nonprofit Connect has impacted their organization's ability to better achieve its mission.
 
2017 GOALS:
  1. In 2017, Nonprofit Connect will continue to expand and develop programming to position our training as feeders to national professional certifications.
  2. We are meeting our members where they are by providing more on-demand training and webinars for nonprofit development. We launched the eLearning Center in January 2017, which offers webinars, toolkits, videos and other online resources just for nonprofit professionals.
  3. In 2017 we plan to offer more customized training, including board and staff retreats, to our nonprofit members. This custom, on-site training will increase capacity for local organizations.
Needs Statement
  1. Membership Services ($63,800) to cover the cost of the membership management system, the Director of Membership, and member services (e.g., ResourceLink and GrantStation). 
  2. Office and Training Facility ($79,000) including rent and supplies.
  3. Nonprofit Connect Capacity ($122,000) for the Director of Programming, Director of Marketing and Office Coordinator.

We offer programming and services primarily in the Kansas City area. However our nonprofit job board, JobLink, lists jobs from other areas in the Midwest, and we also able to bring custom training to any almost area in the Midwest. Our eLearning Center is boundless, offering an online training center accessible from anywhere in the world.
CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement

As I reflect on 2016, I am proud to report our accomplishments as an organization. We continue to listen to our the needs of the nonprofit sector, and meet those challenges head on with education and resources.

Early in the year we began researching and developing the eLearning Center, our new online training portal. We already offer almost 100 educational programs for nonprofit professionals annually, and as of the center's launch in January 2017, we can now bring the learning directly to our members with webinars, on-demand training and online toolkits.

We grew our educational offerings in 2016, providing 95 programs that engaged 5,280 nonprofit professionals, board members and volunteers. Most importantly over half of these programs were offered free for members, creating an accessible learning environment for all nonprofits regardless of budget size. New programs include Harmony: The Executive Director and the Board, Creating a High Quality Case Statement and a program on monthly giving programs.

And we also grew our membership in 2016, recruiting 157 new members who saw the value in belonging to our nonprofit network. We’re proud of our 84% member retention rate, and we’re constantly developing our resources and membership value for organizations.

 As we look ahead to 2017, we're excited to offer custom training for our nonprofit and business members.  As a leader in nonprofit capacity building for Kansas City, our custom programs like board and staff retreats will meet members where they are, and strengthen the team and organization.
 
It seems our sector is gaining more attention and more credibility. As we continue to accomplish our good work, nonprofits are garnering the respect we deserve and gaining recognition for the impact we make in our community. At Nonprofit Connect, our mission is to link this nonprofit community to education, resources and networking so that organizations can more effectively achieve their missions. We look forward to taking our organization to the next level to better serve our members, the nonprofit sector and the greater community.

Short-Term Success

Within three months of launch in January 2017, the eLearning Center saw over 100 downloads and purchases from 26 organizations. Resources include recorded webinars and programs, downloadable toolkits, and self-paced, online courses, with 22 unique resources accessed. 

By December 2017, Nonprofit Connect will offer at least 50 new resources in the eLearning Center, and launch three video- and/or document-based toolkits for nonprofits. At least 50 different nonprofit organizations will have downloaded an online resource from the eLearning Center.
Long-Term Success

Nonprofit Connect's eLearning Center will serve as the ultimate tool for nonprofit professional development the Midwest. The resources will help nonprofit professionals build their capacity and further their organization's mission. And eLearning Center brings these resources to the nonprofit professional, so that even if they don't have time to attend a Nonprofit Connect educational program, the individual can still work on professional development right at their desk.

Ultimately, the eLearning Center will transform the work capacity of nonprofit professionals, with 90% reporting that their ability to perform their jobs and achieve their missions had increased as a result of the eLearning resource. 
Program Success Monitored By We are data analytics provided by our eLearning software provider to monitor eLearning Center traffic. We also administer a Member Survey annually, which will include specific feedback questions about eLearning Center.

Description

The Philanthropy Awards Luncheon is Nonprofit Connect's signature event, when we come together as a community to recognize extraordinary leaders in philanthropy. We celebrate the kindness of those who give back to Kansas City by awarding the Philanthropist, Business Philanthropist, Nonprofit Professional and Volunteer of the Year. To date, Nonprofit Connect has honored over 100 established leaders over thirty years. With more than 1,000 members of the nonprofit and business community attending every year, the Luncheon is Kansas City's oldest and largest celebration of giving. This is Nonprofit Connect's single fundraising event of the year, and the funds raised at the Luncheon allow Nonprofit Connect to continue to offer education, resources and networking so that area nonprofit organizations can more effectively achieve their missions.

Short-Term Success
For 2018, the attendance goal is 1000 with a $180,000 gross revenue goal and net goal of $100,000. 
Long-Term Success The Awards Luncheon will be the most recognized and best attended luncheon in Greater Kansas City with a net per dollar exceeding 60 cents. Through the Philanthropy Awards Luncheon, community awareness will be raised about the importance of philanthropy and the nonprofit organizations that serve our community.
Program Success Monitored By The number of nominations from local nonprofit organizations for people and organizations to be considered as honorees is an indication of the sector's buy-in to the event. We also track attendance and net revenues.
Examples of Program Success In 2017, the 33nd Annual Philanthropy Awards Luncheon netted $100,770, achieving and surpassing our budgeted net of $92,240. This income goes directly to providing education, resources and networking so local nonprofit organizations can more effectively achieve their missions. Highly successful results like these are critical because the Luncheon is Nonprofit Connect's only special fundraising event each year.
Description

Nonprofit Connect offers relevant and affordable skill-building training to nonprofit professionals and volunteers (new to the sector or with years of experience). Programs are planned semi-annually. Topics and speakers are selected from industry literature, outreach to professional associations and experts, and program evaluation feedback. In 2016, we offered more than 95 educational programs in nonprofit management, governance, fundraising, marketing, volunteer management and professional development, serving over 5,200 individuals.

Short-Term Success By December 2017, Nonprofit Connect will provide at least 25 training programs for members on the topics on governance, leadership, marketing, fund development or operations. We hold at least eight class meetings of the Executive Directors Institute each year to serve 15 nonprofit executive directors annually. And we will develop and implement curriculum to support 15 emerging managers for the launch of Mangers institute. 
Long-Term Success Ultimately Nonprofit Connect educational programs increase the professional capacity of local nonprofit staff to better achieve their organization's mission.
Program Success Monitored By We ask all program attendees to complete a short survey evaluation of each program within 24 hours of the program's completion. This feedback on the topics, speakers, and structure enables us to review and change our programs as needed. We also administer a biennial survey of membership that asks about challenges and needs that organizations have. We take these results into account when planning our program calendar for each year. 
Examples of Program Success
In our 2016 membership survey, educational programs were one of the top 3 reasons members cited for joining Nonprofit Connect. Asked where they go for professional development, members and non-members ranked Nonprofit Connect first. People frequently tell us that Nonprofit Connect is the first place they were directed by a friend, co-worker or online to go when looking for information about nonprofits in Kansas City.
 
In 2016, 94% of program attendees surveyed reported an increase in knowledge and understanding of the nonprofit program topic.
CEO Comments
Nonprofits are challenged by three main areas which impact all businesses, however some more view more impact on businesses within the nonprofit sectors. The three areas include:
 
  1. The change in the economy which further affected how nonprofits acquired revenue and resources. 
  2. The steady growth of technology has made an impact on how nonprofits market their organizations. The growing demand to have a quality website with compelling stories coupled with a demand for prompt communication and effective marketing. This area requires continual resources both financial and staffing to experience the rewards and establish growth.
  3. The generation shift is affecting nonprofits in a dramatic way. The next generation has a vastly different view toward giving, volunteering, joining and participation. Nonprofits, such as Nonprofit Connect, must evolve with the shift or greater challenges will occur. 
 
These 3 factors are impacting our organizations and our community and Nonprofit Connect will strive to lead the nonprofit sector with emerging trends, skilled talent and provide information to facilitate the shift. All a part of helping nonprofits network, learn and grow.

Experience

Luann Feehan joined Nonprofit Connect as interim executive director in April 2012. Luann brings 20 years of association and chamber leadership and business-to-business networking facilitation experience to this position.  

Over the previous 10 years, Luann served the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce in top administration and membership development positions. She started as Director of Member Development and more recently as Director of Strategic Initiatives, with promotions in 2009 to Vice President of Member Development and then to Chief Revenue Officer. Her leadership responsibilities included directing The Chamber Champions ambassador group, conducting monthly networking programs, facilitating CEO roundtables, executing an annual manufacturing summit and organization meetings for the Leadership Circle membership. During her tenure with the Chamber, Luann increased membership revenue by 45%, which led to two national awards from the American Chamber of Commerce Executives in the past two years.
 
Previously, Luann was Chief Operating Officer and Interim Executive Director for the Missouri Restaurant Association. Having started her own small business in 1989, Luann is familiar with the challenges and rewards of operating on a small scale to achieve big results. Her real-life experiences have given her a high level of expertise on issues such as business development, integrity selling, meaningful customer service, strategic and long-range planning, and the need to build strong, loyal teams. 
She was most recently recognized as one of Kansas City’s Most Influential women.

Organization Comments
As the Kansas City nonprofit sector continues to grow we have an opportunity to grow our membership base, as well as demonstrate our revamped membership benefits to those organizations who have let their membership lapse or have never been members. Our current challenge is getting the word out to the nonprofit sector of our membership benefits that enable all levels and types of professionals - from entry level assistants, to Executive Directors, to for-profit business professionals -  to do their jobs better. Our budget depends on both retaining current members and attracting new members, and we are focusing our efforts on making sure we are providing membership benefits that are valuable to all levels of employee and types of organization.
 
As we head into the second half of 2017 we are noticing fewer job opportunities posted to JobLink. This is an indicator of the improving economy and job stability, but provides a challenge to our budget as we depend on JobLink revenues to pay for most of our overhead and administrative expenses. 
 
Our newest opportunity that we are developing in 2017 is eLearning. We are working on creating a full schedule of webinars, both live and on-demand, as well as downloadable toolkits and resources. We all have increasing demands on our time and energy, and we want our members to be able to access benefits at any time from their own office or home. We see this need as an opportunity to meet our members where they are, as well as an area to build our revenue by providing services that are in demand.
