Background Statement

Liberty Meals on Wheels was formed on March 26, 1973. A local minister, Bill Riggs, discovered a bare refrigerator during a home visit to a senior member of the church. After sharing his concern with the Liberty Ministerial Alliance that it was likely that other Liberty seniors facing the same plight, Liberty Meals on Wheels was born.

The organization’s first volunteer coordinator, Irene Thomas, worked with Frances Hembree & other volunteers to create menus, shop for groceries & to ensure there were enough volunteers each day to cook & deliver meals to approximately 20 seniors.

It soon became evident that the program needed to expand. Not only did the number of recipients continue to grow, but coordinators also found that some recipients had special dietary needs. So they contracted with Liberty Hospital to take over the meal prep. This partnership still exists today.

As of March 2017, Liberty Meals on Wheels delivers approximately 65 hot, nutritious & affordable meals each week day with the continued support of Liberty Hospital, the City of Liberty & over 100 volunteers. This translates to 18,200 meals & 3,920 volunteer hours donated annually.

Impact Statement
Accomplishments

  2. Served approximately 20 more people on a daily basis than we served in 2017
  3. Continue to spread the word that our program works hard to ensure no senior in Liberty goes hungry

Goals
  1. Launch Meals on Wheels Loves Pets Too Program (January 2020)
  2. Serve more meals and more recipients than the prior month
  3. Continue to spread awareness about our program
Needs Statement
Top 5 Most Pressing Needs
  1. Funding to continue to subsidize meals for recipients who are unable to afford the service (currently we are subsidizing 24 recipients at approximately $80 per month per recipient)
  2. Funding to launch the Meals on Wheels Loves Pets Too Program (at the moment we plan to use donated food and need money to rent a storage space--approximately $100 per month)
  3. Help spreading the word about our program. We want to make sure no senior in Liberty goes hungry.
  4. Volunteers to assist in snow removal during the winter months.
  5. Volunteers to serve as "phone buddies" to our recipients to help combat loneliness.

Programs
Description The Liberty Meals on Wheels Board believes no senior in Liberty should go hungry. The requested funds will be used to provide monies for a contingency fund needed for emergency support for recipients who appear to legitimately need subsidized meals. The Mid-America Regional Council subsidizes meals for 15 recipients in our program and has met their cap. Clay County Senior Services also subsidizes meals but many recipients in need do not qualify for their funding. Any additional funds are used for potential recipients who fall through the cracks in terms of receiving funding from our other two available sources. The number of recipients who have no other available funding source is constantly on the rise.

Examples of Program Success
In January of 2018, the Meals on Wheels Board subsidized 78 meals. In September 2019, we subsidized 409 meals.

Liberty Meals on Wheels is the ultimate example of a program that improves the health, wellness and care for seniors in our community. Eight-one percent of Meals on Wheels recipients say the service improves their health. Additionally, 92% percent of recipients say it enables them to stay in their home. The safety check that comes with a meal and a friendly visit from the volunteer makes 90% of seniors feel safer and more secure in their home. Meals on Wheels recipients also report fewer falls which can cost our nation $31 billion each year.
