Mission Statement

One Kansas City Radio (KONN-100.1 FM) unites the multicultural voices in the Kansas City Urban Core through programming and community services that entertain, educate, inform and inspire.

Background Statement
In 2012, the International Radio Project of Kansas City, Inc., launched One Kansas City Radio, an online radio station streaming music 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Coupled with live interactions with Social Media Networks and its own blogging capability, One Kansas City Radio will serve as KONN’s online solution to effectively reaching Millennials through the various online media venues that they prefer and use to receive entertainment and news.
Launching on the FM dial in October of 2017, the International Radio Project of Kansas City (One Kansas City Radio, KONN 100.1 FM Radio), a new local noncommercial community-based radio station, emerged as the premier on-air and online empowerment, engagement, and entertainment venue - unique and richly diverse as the community to which it belongs, Kansas City.
Impact Statement
This year One Kansas City Radio has had many accomplishments. Our most impactful was the launch of our “Crown Crafted Music Series" in partnership with the Mid-Continent Public Library, ArtsKC and The Kansas City Museum. These series features local musicians performing live for free which we broadcast on our FM dial, audio stream and Facebook Live. Second, the launch of our podcast platform has created an on demand option for our target listeners. Lastly, we are proud to have launched a community session’s program in which we record and live stream selected community organizations forums and talks and broadcast them on our Facebook live and make them available on our podcast platform to the public.
Next year our top priorities are to raise funds to hire two staff members to mange the station and fundraise, add and launch our mobile app for our listeners and to lastly to upgrade our studio equipment.
Needs Statement

One Kansas City Radio has come out of our initial launch and serving the community by the efforts of our 100% volunteer staff and board. For us to continue or operation and grow we need to raise funds for 1 full time staff member to assume the executive director/station manager role and 1 staff member to assume a development role. Our budget calls for $40,000 for both of these positions. These two positions will satisfy our other three needs needs, which are coordinating and managing volunteers, raising consistent funds and reaching our annual marketing budget $5000.

While our target market is the Kansas City urban core community (roughly 470,000 [ACS 2012]), our reach extends well beyond Kansas City, Kansas and the greater Kansas City areas.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
Today, millions of Americans in communities across the country go to their local community radio stations for information, culture, and dialogue. Now, more than ever before, these radio stations choose, produce and share programming content that reflects local community core values and choice. Furthermore, they are trusted media voices, respected and used as reliable sources for news/information by local residents.
The local Kansas City radio market is diverse in every way: race, ethnicity, language, gender identity, faith values, political inclination, disability and many others. It should provide local radio broadcasters rich sources for inspiration and inclusion of diverse voices in daily radio programming. Sadly, few commercial and noncommercial radio broadcasters, if any, have taken advantage of Kansas City’s demographic richness.
  • Severe education, health, and economic disparities that disproportionately affect minority, immigrant and refugee populations also isolate and alienate them to the margins of society with little access to information for self-improvement.
  • A sharp shift in radio listener race/ethnic and age demographics has created an unmet demand in local culturally/linguistically appropriate radio programming.
  • The disappearance of minority-led/owned and operated commercial radio broadcasting stations (through mergers and acquisitions) has created a vacuum where the listening needs of underrepresented groups have been largely ignored and excluded in general programming.

At KONN 100.1 FM radio, our proposal is to develop an interactive platform through which underrepresented voices in local communities and neighborhoods can contribute ideas and discussion to help better themselves and their communities.
This interactive platform consists of informed & engaged listeners, unique & diverse information, diverse and international music and conversational live programming & online streaming and finally use of the latest radio and computer (web) technology.
It is our vision that One Kansas City Radio will provide a platform where people of all ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds feel welcomed and respected. As we provide this forum for the Urban Core and surrounding communities, we seek to unite all its listeners and followers through music, programming, and events that reflect the beauty of diversity.

"Crown Crafted" is a monthly concert series featuring local musicians. It showcases ethnic and urban acts performing inside our broadcast studio (located in the Kansas City Museum in the historic Northeast community) and other locations around Kansas City. The concerts will be broadcasted live on our signal at 100.1 FM, and streamed live on our website and Facebook Live. The shows will be archived and rebroadcasted on Fridays during our "Crown Crafted" radio program.
