Mission Statement Providing peace of mind to families impacted by a cancer crisis by offering financial support for needs related to day-to-day expenses such as childcare, travel, and living expenses.
Background Statement
In 2008, Stephanie Krider Vest was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Gamma Delta Lymphoma.  She received her diagnosis just a few short weeks after giving birth to her third child.  Complications with her illness led to an unexpected 14 week hospital stay at the Mayo Clinic for Stephanie.  Friends, family and neighbors rallied to gather resources to ensure that her three children and household were cared for during her absence. This led to the very first Pink Laundry 5K in 2008, the proceeds of which went directly to support the Vest family.  The funds allowed Eric and Stephanie to focus on her health and rest in the knowledge that their children were provided for and their mortgage was paid.  The Pink Laundry 5K was so named in honor of Stephanie and her hot pink laundry room.

Sadly, Stephanie lost her battle with cancer.  Shortly after her passing, the orignal 5K race committee made a contribution to House of Compassion - a volunteer group that had provided emotional support and respite to the Vests during their stay at the Mayo Clinic.  Subsequent races and fundraisers have generated financial support for other families in the Kansas City community.  In 2011, the Stephanie Vest Foundation was officially formed with the goal of continuing to pay it forward to local families dealing with similar cancer issues.
Impact Statement

In the last five years, The Stephanie Vest Foundation has assisted over 130 local families and awarded over $300,000 in financial grants.  In the coming year, The Stephanie Vest Foundation will focus on its mission of providing financial support to families going through a cancer crisis.  The foundation hopes to meet the needs of 15 - 20 families, with room for growth.

The Stephanie Vest Foundation intends to seek grant funding for the support of ongoing special projects and for the initiation of additional special projects.  Funding of current projects would support annual fundraisers, such as the Pink Friday Trivia Night and the Pink Laundry 5K Run.  Projects to be initiated consist of the establishment of an endowment with the goal of generating ongoing funds to provide to families, and a special financial allotment dedicated specifically to supporting families with a child who has received a cancer diagnosis.
Needs Statement

  1. Funds to provided financial assistance to additional families.  With $3,000 being the average cost of assisting one family, the foundation will need to generate $45,000 to $60,000 in order to meet its goal of helping 15 to 20 families.
  2. Seek ways to grow the foundation and increase the number of families assisted.
  3. Establish an endowment to further the mission.  Based on The Stephanie Vest Foundation's current budget, an endowment of $120,000 would ensure the continued annual assistance of 15 to 20 families, while allowing for continued growth through fundraising and grant seeking efforts.
  4. Seek and obtain grant funding for fundraising events.
  5. Seek and obtain grant funding for the development of a special allotment of funds for families with a child dealing with cancer.  $15,000 would ensure the care of approximately 5 families.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement One of the greatest successes of the The Stephanie Vest Foundation is that the foundation offers a personal approach to the grant-seeking process. This is done by ensuring that two members of the foundation board meet personally with the families seeking help to ask them how the foundation can best help them to meet challenges, alleviate stress, shoulder burdens, and provide peace of mind. The primary challenge faced by The Stephanie Vest Foundation is that the entire organization consists of a volunteer board, which tends to create issues and conflicts related to time.
