Background Statement
Two Benedictine nuns opened a school to 45 students in September 1912. The present school building was completed in 1951. In 1973, Sacred Heart and St. John the Evangelist elementary schools were consolidated and renamed Our Lady of Unity.

Our Lady of Unity Catholic School presently has 148 students of all faiths, income and ethnicity and range in grade levels from preschool through 8th grade. The average household income of the Shawnee neighborhood is $51,000. This residential area according to Wyandotte County Statistics shows the population numbers are trending up and the length of the residents staying in the neighborhood are above average which indicates a strong stable community. The school is also a hardworking and tight knit community. Fifty two percent of the student’s quality for Title 1 services, 80% are English Language Learners, and 89% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunches. Many of the parents work multiple jobs to provide their children with everything that they need. These parents dream of a better life for their children; a better life through receiving a quality education at Our Lady of Unity. Despite the financial hardships the families in this community face every day, this is also a school community that has a heart of gold, a strong work ethic, and a history of rolling up its sleeves to overcome any challenge or complete any project that may arise. Our Lady of Unity is truly a bright light in a world facing difficult challenges.
Impact Statement
Accomplishments from 2017-2018 school years include:
  1. Test scores for middle school have dramatically improved. In the Fall of 2016, only 5% of the 6th graders were on grade level or above. Winter of 2016, 41% of 6th graders were on grade level or above and in the spring of 2017, 43% of 6th graders were on grade level or above. The 7th and 8th graders jumped up to 60% and 67% respectfully.
  2. Three years ago, Our lady of Unity School with the help of fundraisers and a grant built a playground which included swings, a slide and climbing equipment. This playground was built by the parents of Our Lady of Unity.
  3. Last year with the help of generous donors and a raffle we were able to install a new security system and new exterior doors.
  4. The school received a donation of hands free toilets and sinks for the existing bathrooms. Some of the remaining money from the raffle paid for new partitions, epoxy floors and fresh paint.
  5. Our Lady of unity School now has a high-quality preschool designed to set up the children for future academic, emotional and social success. The school opened in 2017 with funds raised from generous donors.

Goals for the upcoming school year include:
  1. Establish a STEM based laboratory which will put our students on a more equal footing with other schools and districts.
  2. Our Lady of Unity is trying to address replacing the unsafe 1952 asbestos tiled floors throughout the school.
  3. The school is in the process of raising money to replace the original energy inefficient windows.
  4. Regularly revising the curriculum guides to reflect alignment with appropriate Catholic, state or national standards.
  5. Contribute to endowment.
  6.  Our Lady of Unity is seeking funds to buy 100 Chrome Books.  Our present laptops are breaking down and it is rare that there are enough for a class. Quite often the students have to share.
Needs Statement
  1. Assistance with funds for STEM laboratory
  2. Contributions to floor replacement
  3. Contributions to window replacement
  4. Scholarship support to ensure that every child that desires a Catholic education can attend.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
The mission of educating our students-- body, mind and spirit through Christ, remains at the fore-front of all that we do to enrich their educational experience. I strongly believe that Our Lady of Unity is on track to be one of the foremost Catholic elementary schools in the state and to promote a full educational experience for its students. Our faculty and staff are always willing to help your student to succeed.

This year, through a generous grant, our teachers and staff had the opportunity to attend National Catholic Education Association Conference held in St. Louis. They took full advantage of the incredible array of professional development workshops offered in specific subject areas and innovations in pedagogy. The NCEA Conference is a celebration of Catholic Education. Teachers and staff returned renewed and invigorated in their roles in the class-room.

The faculty and staff of Our Lady of Unity began a STEM program targeting K-8. The school is raising money for a new STEM laboratory. This program and future laboratory will put our students at the cutting edge.

Description
Our Lady of Unity needs desperately a new Science Laboratory for the student’s grades K-8. This laboratory is vital to the education of a well- rounded student.

We obtained an in-kind donation to help launch our effort to build the science laboratory. A company called American Lab customized for us a detailed plan pro bono. (see attached design) This laboratory was designed for an empty classroom and will include the stools, white board, all electrical outlets, sinks, faucets, drain boards, bookshelves, tables and chairs, a drying rack as well as cabinets for storage and individual lab centers.

The equipment needed for this laboratory will also include a goggle cabinet and goggles, aprons, magnifying glasses, thermometers, pulleys, meter sticks, washers, balances and blocks of various sizes to name just a few.

The main goal or objective of assembling the Science lab is to have the students discover a new interest, motivation and passion for Science. Add to the mix are skills for life such as perseverance, problem-solving and researching. Project Science Laboratory has a target date for spring/summer of 2018.
Category Education, General/Other Student Services
Population Served Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Short-Term Success
Short term success includes increasing student awareness of a STEM laboratory and all the safety issues that it encompasses. The children will become familiar with the safety expectations of a laboratory such as the importance of sanitizing goggles, learning about the eye wash station and locking up the materials and equipment when needed.

The students have not been exposed to a true Science Laboratory. The first and most important objective and to assure long term success is to teach the safety and proper care of the laboratory and equipment.
Long-Term Success
The ultimate goal is to develop strong academic skills in Science and Math through activities designed for the English Language Learner. The Science laboratory activities will focus on developing problem-solving skills, increasing vocabulary and most importantly, improving test scores in Math and Science.
Program Success Monitored By
  1. Student and teacher surveys are performed yearly
  2. Absentee and tardy rates are monitored
  3. Compare MAP testing scores to show academic growth.
Examples of Program Success
We have entered our first year of STEM at Our Lady of Unity. The students from K-8 all participate in STEM activities once a week from for one hour.
Description
In the 2018-2019 school year, Project Building a Safer Community will launch- a special focus on seeking donors, businesses and community partners to help fund critical building improvements of its original 63 year-old school building. These improvements are neither cosmetic nor part of an expansion project. These building improvements address critical and immediate health and safety risks facing our children, teachers and staff and threaten the fragile economic viability of our school. The school has an imminent need to replace its asbestos containing floor tiles ($90, 000) and the original windows which are energy inefficient. ($100,000)).

The primary goal of Project Building a Safer Community is to maintain a proper learning environment for the students. Good facilities appear to be a precondition for student learning. A growing body of research has linked student achievement and behavior to the physical building condition.

The students of Our Lady of Unity deserve a school built for their health and safety and to give them the learning opportunities that they require to succeed.
Category Philanthropy, Voluntarism & Grantmaking, General/Other Fundraising
Population Served Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Short-Term Success
PROJECT BUILDING A SAFER COMMUNITY will be able to display in the short term almost an immediate benefit at Our Lady of Unity School. We will demonstrate this by showing the changing attitude and well being of the teachers and staff.

There is evidence that building decay can impact the quality of teachers' instruction and plays a role in their confidence as well as their health and happiness. The discovery around the effects isn't anything new. Even in 1988, studies were being done. ( www.eric.ed.gov )

Our Lady of Unity will verify this by having the teachers take a survey at the end of the school year 2018-2019 and then after the building has been updated and rebuilt in the winter of 2019-2020 .The faculty and staff will be appraised and measured to see if morale, attendance and enthusiasm has improved.
Long-Term Success
In the past school year  2017-2018 and after the school received a new security system and new exterior doors as well as upgraded bathrooms and fresh paint the enrollment went up 15%.

The test scores especially in middle school increased 50% as well. Our Lady of Unity will be able to verify a clear indicator of success by measuring the students MAPS and Diebel scores which are taken three times a year by students K-8. We can begin the comparison of the scores starting tin the school year 2017/18 and ending 2020/21.
