Background Statement
St. Michael’s Veterans Center, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization since 2011 that empowers veterans through an array of services, programs and activities customized to best improve the quality of life of Kansas City’s veterans. These services encourage the sustained permanent housing for residents, many of whom are overcoming some of life’s most difficult struggles. This service model is couched within a campus community that encourages mutual support.
St. Michael’s Veterans Center is a campus on a 24-acre site located at East 39th Street and Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd., just south of the VA Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. This unique campus consists of 117 affordable apartments that offer permanent housing, a Services Center, a planned Honor Garden and various recreational areas all together that address the needs of at-risk military veterans.

The development of the St. Michael’s Veterans Center campus represents a great public-private
partnership. A proven team of private firms and community partners, each of whom had the
experience and dedication to successfully design and complete an undertaking of this scope and
purpose, came together to create long range solutions for the unmet needs of those who served in our country’s military.

Impact Statement
Past year accomplishments:
  • Another non-profit delivered services before 2017; they consistently organized on-site programs and services to the 130 residents since 2014.

Current year goals:
  1. Transfer board of director membership with a refocused purpose to serve veterans, and correspondingly hire new staff to deliver services instead of contracting with previous co-developer.
  2. Expand on-site services to residents and launch new programming for veterans not living on the campus with a focus on mental health and employment.
  3. Form a Leadership Council to harness the interest of various community and veterans’ organizations to better impact the lives of veterans and support the mission of St. Michael’s Veterans Center.
Needs Statement
  1. Establish funding sources for newly focused non-profit work to support staff, operating costs of the on-site Services Center and support to veterans.
  2. Volunteer engagement that is focused on organization priorities, specifically staffing of the on-site coffee shop and hospitality in the Service Center.
  3. Consistent sources of in-kind donations of personal care, household items, and food.

SMVC does not have a limiting geographic area for service, rather we focus on serving military veterans in the Greater Kansas City area.
CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
While established in 2011, St. Michael’s Veterans Center, Inc. (SMVC) reorganized in 2017 when the original non-profit partner discontinued its involvement for its own strategic reasons. St. Michael’s Veterans Center has rebuilt a strong governing board and hired experienced and skilled staff capable of fully implementing the original vision of the campus to be the destination for all veterans seeking a supportive path to a healthy and stable future. Today, SMVC continues to offer quality, affordable permanent housing to homeless and disabled veterans through its partnership with Yarco Companies as the property manager, and is building a compassionate and professional response to all Kansas City veterans who seek professional support and a community that understands and values them.
As a reconstructed nonprofit, activities in 2017 will focus on implementing organizational systems required of a non-profit concerned with impact and accountability. The Board of Directors has completed a fiscal year budget, established partnerships to support day-to-day HR and financial operations, focused on development needs by creating a donor database and created a development committee focused on individual giving, planned giving and special events.
The immediate challenge is to create an effective fund-raising campaign beginning with early supporters who were uncultivated over the last three years. SMVC is forming a Leadership Council to better engage community leadership volunteers who are dedicated to cultivating their relationships and networks to support the SMVC mission.
St. Michael’s is more than a place to live. SMVC is the social service provider for the residents of St. Michael’s apartments. We insure that an array of activities is available for residents to enjoy including a community garden, food pantry, personal care pantry, and movie club. We assist residents identify community resources to meet their needs and help access support when it is available. The maze of health care, Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid can be overwhelming for anyone. We work to ensure all resident are taking advantage of benefits they have earned.
Services are offered by professional staff who have many years working with homeless and families in need. A professional approach includes a caring attitude and respect for every person at St. Michael’s Veteran Center. We appreciate our veterans and their service to our country. We are honored to walk with them and share their joys and hopes for the future.

Program Success Monitored By Program success is monitored by resident occupancy, monitoring agreements and plans that create solutions to problems, and tracking of participation in one-on-one or community life activities.
Examples of Program Success SMVC is pleased to support residents to achieve and maintain quality, affordable housing.  St. Michael's Veterans Center experiences little resident turnover and residents give high praise to the quality of housing, sense of community and professional and compassionate services they receive.
As the Lead Referral Agency, we assist homeless veterans find their way to St. Michael’s Veteran Center for housing. The Missouri Housing Development Corporation requires us to verify housing status, special needs and military service records to determine eligibility. We encourage people to apply for one of the amazing apartments here or direct them to other options if they don’t qualify for St. Michael’s. We work with other homeless service providers to follow up with veterans who need emergency or short term shelter or other social service needs. St. Michael's Veterans Center participates in the communities Coordinated Entry process.
As the Lead Referral Agency, we work in concert with the for-profit entity, YARCO, that provides housing for persons in need throughout the Midwest. Services are offered in compliance with all rules and regulations of the federal, state and local authorities.

St. Michael’s Veteran Center is here for any and all veterans of our community. We welcome onto the campus those who are seeking housing as well as those seeking to serve others. Social service agencies are our partners in assuring veterans receive a seamless array of supportive services. Professional staff are available to assist veterans and their families navigate the array of government and nonprofit organizations that serve veterans.
We assume all veterans have some important gifts to offer. That gift may be time to volunteer, soliciting gifts for others, visiting hospitals or simply walking side by side. St. Michael’s Veteran Center celebrates with veterans their service to our country and the camaraderie they share. Experience Susan has thirteen years of non-profit executive and leadership experience with Catholic Charities of Kansas City – St. Joseph and the National MS Society, and an additional fifteen years of experience in international and domestic program development with the U.S. Peace Corps, Metropolitan Lutheran Ministry and Cathedral Social Services. She has led teams of 25 professional employees and administered a $4.5 million budget. Susan has had direct responsibility for strategy development and implementation, systems management, measuring impact, influencing organizational culture, and leading staff and volunteers with attention to role clarity and integration with the organizational mission. She has managerial and direct experience with individual giving, including prospecting, cultivation and relationship management. Susan has a consistent orientation toward creating connections and building relationships that make a difference.

CEO Comments St. Michael's Veterans Center has an experienced management team with a combined 63 years of experience in non-profit leadership and management, program development leading to impact for various low-income and vulnerable populations.  The expertise of the management team is creating a learning environment with area social work schools involving five year-long internships to expand the organizational capacity to deliver services to veterans.
