Mission Statement: To bring glory to God and impact the world by developing godly leaders for every sector of society through global higher education.
Vision Statement: One day every university student in the world will have at least one professor who can help them learn to live and lead as Christ’s followers in their nations.
Background Statement
In 1986, God gave Dr. Danny McCain the vision to start Departments of Christian Studies in public universities around the world. In 1988 he began teaching in a public university in Nigeria, where he continues to teach with Global Scholars to this day. Yet it soon became obvious that there was a need for Christian professors to bring the truth and grace of the gospel to students in all academic disciplines. Over the next two decades he, and then our second President Dr. Daryl McCarthy, led Global Scholars’ expansion to over 35 nations, including many inaccessible to traditional missions. Under the new leadership of Global Scholars’ third President Dr. Stan Wallace we are preparing for a new season of growth.
Global Scholars professors teach in a wide range of disciplines—math, ethics, engineering, management, business, natural sciences, law, education and many other fields—all from a Christian worldview. Due to their credibility as university professors, Global Scholars’ professors are able to establish close relationships with their students and shape these future leaders. One former Global Scholars professor in the Ukraine said, “I am not the future of Ukraine. But my students are. They will make the difference for the future of this nation.”
Impact Statement

Due to the urgent need of reaching those who have never heard of Jesus, our vision is that one day every university student in the world will be influenced by at least one Christian professor who can help them learn to live and lead as followers of Jesus Christ in their nations.

From our inception in 1998 Global Scholars grew steadily in the number of Christian professors reaching students worldwide. However, by the late 2000s our growth had plateaued at 44 professors. To address this, in 2011 we “retooled” in order to be more effective in fulfilling our mission. We then set the goal of 100 Global Scholars professors reaching 15,000 students annually by the end of the 2015-16 academic year. This was our “Multiply Your Impact” initiative. We met and even exceeded this goal!

God has blessed this initiative, resulting in very exciting growth these past few years. This year alone Global Scholars professors are reaching over 25,000 students. They minister to their students by sharing biblical truth in their classrooms, through personal evangelism and evangelistic gatherings in their homes, as well as personal discipleship and leading bible studies for students who become followers of Christ.

For instance, for many years we have wondered how the world might have been different if there had been a Christian professor at the King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where the Islamic scholar Abdallah Azzam radicalized the young and impressionable Osama bin Laden.

There are now 128 Christian professors in 42 nations, reaching over 25,000 students from 132 nations. Current students coming to Christ, and also former students who are now in the work force are leading as Christ followers. Students are learning to have a Christian worldview in areas of engineering, science, medicine, law, etc. This year the work continues to reach the "Global 20/20 Vision" of 250 Christian professors reaching 50,000 students a year by 2020!
Needs Statement

Prayer warriors who will bathe every aspect of this ministry in prayer.
From the students we are trying to reach, to the professors serving in a country not their own, to our professors serving in their home country, to our donors, to our board, to our administrative office staff. God's blessing on our work, health, families, etc. is extremely important to us. Thank you for joining us in prayer.
Global Scholars is a growing, missional organization. In fact, in the past year we have grown from 115 Christian professors serving world wide to now 128, and more to come. It is exciting! We need awareness for Global Scholars to grow. Would you be willing to share with a friend, church group, college group or your sphere of influence about the opportunity to learn more about Global Scholars?
In order to reach our financial goals, we need people who are passionate about their faith and higher education internationally and who share in the mission and vision of Global Scholars.  It is quite costly to have professors all over the world to reach university students for Christ, In fact, the budgeted goal for the current Global 20/20 Vision campaign is to have $5.5 million by June 30, 2020.  Every donation, large or small, helps, is appreciated and is very important to us.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
Global Scholars is experiencing a season of unprecedented success in the wake of restructuring, many new employees with exceptional gifts and passion for our ministry, and streamlined systems that allow us to focus more of our energies on those areas that produce the greatest growth. Our greatest challenge is maintaining adequate funding to keep pace with the growth and opportunities we are finding for Christian professors to serve in global higher education. We are addressing this issue by developing our Advancement department and increasing the quantity and quality of our communications to donors and potential donors to tell our story well and keep everyone informed of opportunities and progress.
As CEO I'm excited by these opportunities, and even these challenges, as they all confirm that God is doing something amazing in the universities of the world, and it is exciting to be a part of it! It also gives us a chance to share in more ways our five core convictions:
  1. Great Commission should be the top priority for Christians, until everyone in the world has the chance to hear the gospel.
  2. Nations will only be reached "top down" as leaders come to know Christ and lead from biblical convictions.
  3. These leaders are shaped most dramatically during their time as students in universities in their nations.
  4. Their professors are the most influential people in their lives during the university years.
  5. Every student in the world must have a Christian professor to help them learn to live and lead as Christ's followers in their nations!
There are now 128 Christian professors serving with Global Scholars in 42 nations, reaching over 25,000 students from 132 nations. We are working toward our "Global 20/20 Vision" of 250 Christian professors reaching 50,000 students a year by 2020!
Description The Fellows Program has been in existence since Global Scholars was founded in 1986. It identifies "missional Christian academics" and helps them go to the world's universities and effectively influence their students for Christ. Fellows serve outside of the US and Canada as foreigners in a country that is not their own.

Short-Term Success
On the fellows side, it is a thrill to hear that a professor has been able to go to coffee with his/her students or have a gathering of students in his/her home or even better, begin studying God's word with them. This building of relationships and friendships is what it's all about, and we are hearing of these success stories all the time.
It is also exciting when an academic decides that he/she would like to join Global Scholars in our fellows program and teach internationally. Each one we have provides deep and wide opportunities to share with students about Christ and further the mission.
On the stewardship side, it is invigorating each time we get word of a new donor that loves the mission and vision of Global Scholars. Or, when we receive a gift (large of small) from someone, it is a success that we are extremely grateful for!
Long-Term Success
Global Scholars has a network of relationships with universities worldwide. We leverage this to help fellows secure positions in these universities. In addition, training and support are provided as the Fellow goes through the university's application/interview process. We also provide counsel/perspective to help a fellow determine where God may be calling him or her to serve.
Accounting/Benefits: Many universities are not able to pay professors a living wage. As a 501(c)(3) organization, Global Scholars provides a means by which Fellows may raise additional funds.
Global Scholars also offers health care & retirement benefits.
Cultural Orientation/Adaptation: Orientation provides invaluable preparation in order to adjust to a new culture.

Examples of Program Success
Success is found when the Fellows are able to have this support, thrive in their academic setting in a foreign country as a professor and do their jobs well. Success is found when, with God's help, a student's life is changed for Christ. That student is then able to reach his/her family and/or community for Christ.
This past semester in the Ivory Coast a Global Scholars Fellow was able to reunite after several years with a former doctoral student, Ngozi, who is now a woman of influence in the country. While sharing a meal together, the student expressed her desire to have a relationship with God. Her professor realized she was ready to give her life to Christ right then and there. So, there in the restaurant, Ngozi accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior!
Over the years we have met many "missional Christian academics" who do not need much of what we provide for Fellows, yet desire to be part of the Global Scholars community.
Specifically, some are national (indigenous) scholars already serving in universities in their own countries. Others are expatriates who have found a position in a foreign university on their own and are already culturally acclimated. Neither group needs the accounting services or benefits Global Scholars provides. Nor do they ask for the pastoral care we provide to Fellows.
Yes they do desire to be part of a community of missional Christian academics to help them follow God's call to be salt and light to their students. Therefore we are launching the "Society of Christian Scholars" to serve and equip these Christian professors to be effective ambassadors on their campuses for Christ.

Short-Term Success
Members of the "Society of Christian Scholars" gain access to a secure, highly-encrypted web portal through which they can securely connect with other Christian professors serving in universities worldwide, even if they are in areas with low wifi bandwidths or in restricted countries. In this way they can learn from one another and encourage one another to "love and good deeds" (Hebrews 10:24) as Christian professors seeking to be salt and light among their students.
As the Fellows, members of the "Society of Christian Scholars" members seek to be effective in sharing the Good News and discipling students who come to faith. This training is provided to them via webinars, resources and conferences.
In collaboration with staff and partnering agencies, we provide a learning environment, both on-line and through regional conferencing, to encourage and develop skills in integrating faith in scholarship.
Long-Term Success
Jesus' final command was to go into ALL the world to take the gospel to ALL people (Mark 16:15). Yet over 90% of U.S. Christians' giving stays right here in our own country, while 1.9 billion people worldwide remain unreached. We must correct this imbalance.
By having professors teaching in their native country and building relationships with their students, great progress can be made.
In addition, the Society of Christian Scholars provides comradery and much needed support to all Global Scholars professors, enabling them to be successful and effective.
Program Success Monitored By
We believe that God calls us to work with "all our might" (Ecclesiastes 9:10) and seek to "do our work with excellence" as we implement the "Society of Christian Scholars" to help reach the goals of the Global 2020 Vision. At the same time we affirm that "it is God who is at work within us" (Philippians 2-12) to accomplish His purposes. Specifically, we monitor our programs' effectiveness in the following ways:
  • Actual Revenue as compared to Projected Revenue
  • Actual Expenses as compared to Budgeted Expenses
  • No. of Applicants to the Society of Christian Scholars program
  • No. Accepted to the Society of Christian Scholars program
  • Annual Attrition Rate
  • Net Growth of Scholars

Examples of Program Success Tembo has recently finished his Ph.D. in Uganda and now serves on the faculty of the University of Zambia. He is a maturing, committed Christian with an ongoing mentoring friendship with his Global Scholar in Uganda. They frequently discuss issues of spiritual growth and Tembo's future work and ministry in Zambia. We are encouraged that Tembo's students will have such a Christian professor to teach them biblical truth and share with them the hope of Christ.

Organization Comments

Global Scholars professors serve in nations outside the U.S. and Canada—in nations where students have much less opportunity to hear the gospel. They are teachers, researchers and administrators who share a commitment to serving with excellence in their universities. They are equipped to communicate truth and biblical values in the context of their academic disciplines, as well as minister to students one-to-one and in small groups in their homes. In doing so, they are salt and light (Matt 5:13-14) to their students, helping them become men and women who love the Lord and promote peace, justice and human flourishing in their nations (Jeremiah 29:4-8).
