Background Statement
The Friends of the Conservatory of Music, formerly known as the Conservatory Trustees, began in 1916 as the governing and managing board of the Kansas City Conservatory of Music.

The Conservatory was founded by John A. Cowan in 1906 as a privately-owned institution. In 1914, the Horner Institute of Fine Arts was founded by Charles Horner, whose descendent is a supporter of the Conservatory today. The two organizations officially merged on July 1, 1926 creating the Conservatory of Music of Kansas City.

The first board of trustees consisted of some of Kansas City’s leading civic and business leaders at the time, including W.T. Kemper, Irwin Kirkwood, R.A. Long, J.W. Jenkins, Herbert F. Hall and J.C. Nichols.

In 1959, the Kansas City Conservatory merged with the University of Kansas City, and in 1963, became a part of the University of Missouri System (UMKC). At that time, the Conservatory Trustees became a fundraising constituent organization rather than a governing board.

In 2001, the name was officially changed to Friends of the Conservatory to better reflect their mission and purpose. Today, the main objective of Friends of the Conservatory of Music and Dance is to provide vital support for student scholarships and fellowships. Dedicated to helping ensure the future of music and dance, Friends of the Conservatory provides or facilitates more than $300,000 annually in scholarships from membership dues, fundraising events and other initiatives.

The principal source of Friends scholarship money is the Crescendo! annual black-tie gala. Crescendo! premiered in 1996, in recognition of the Conservatory’s 90th anniversary. Internationally known artists associated with Kansas City and the Conservatory (e.g. composer John Kander and world-renowned dancer/choreographer David Parsons) have been honored and have performed at Crescendo!

In 2012 Crescendo! moved to the Kauffman Center and was a great success featuring a collage concert in Helzberg Hall and dinner in the Brandmeyer Great Hall. The gala has raised nearly $2 million for scholarships, assisting over 300 Conservatory students since the first Crescendo.

Second to funding student scholarships, Friends of the Conservatory is dedicated to expanding public awareness of the important achievements of the Conservatory.
Impact Statement
Accomplishments:

  • Annually, more than $300,000 raised by the Friends of the Conservatory for scholarships which help support 84 Conservatory students.
  • The Crescendo Gala raises more than $250,000 each year through a spectacular Prism concert and dinner at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
  • The Friends of the Conservatory provides funds for Conservatory students to perform in the Kauffman Center three times each academic year.

Goals:

  • Support the goals and vision of the Conservatory including the university's proposed Downtown Arts Campus.
  • Increase membership in the Friends by 20% to increase awareness of the Conservatory as well as funds supporting the education of the next generation of musicians, dancers, educator and healers.
Needs Statement
The Conservatory needs to increase scholarship support to a total of $1,000,000 annually in order to attract the brightest and most talented students to Kansas City.

Recruiting for a Conservatory is like recruiting for a sports team. We need the best players in the right 'positions.' Scholarship support is what allows Conservatory faculty to recruit the most talented students to UMKC.

The Conservatory as a critical resource for the performing arts in Kansas City. We educate the next generation of performers, educators, scholars and healers. We also are an educational resource for the generation of arts supporters through collaborations with The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kansas City Art Institute, Lyric Opera, Kansas City Ballet and Kansas City Symphony among others.

We need people to advocate for the Conservatory in the community, and help with the Conservatory's goals regarding "Excellence, Access, and Innovation."

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
The Friends of the Conservatory of Music and Dance is governed by a 25-member Board of Directors.  In addition to regular members, ex-officio members include the Dean of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance; the President of the Conservatory Alumni Association; the Chairman of the Conservatory Women’s Committee; the President of the Conservatory Jazz Friends; the Director of the Conservatory Music and Dance Academy; the chair(s) of the current year’s Crescendo gala; and past-Presidents.

In addition to the Board of Directors, a group of community leaders comprise the Conservatory Advisory Committee. These people meet annually with the Dean of the Conservatory to provide local, regional and national perspectives on the issues being encountered by the Conservatory.

The primary initiative for the Friends’ each year is the production of our annual benefit gala, Crescendo, which showcases the Conservatory’s talented music and dance faculty and students, and raises funds for student scholarships. Thanks to generous individuals, foundations, and corporations, this event has raised over $2,000,000 for scholarships since it began in 1996.

Membership in the Friends of the Conservatory continues to increase, reflecting a growing awareness of the importance of the Conservatory’s dedication to providing outstanding musicians, dancers, educators, therapists and academicians for Kansas City and around the world.

As we look to the future, we look forward to a state-of-the-art downtown campus for the Conservatory just south of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. In the environment of the Crossroads Arts District, Conservatory students will thrive and start the careers which will lead to our next generation of artists. In this endeavor the Friends of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance is dedicated to providing as much financial and volunteer support as possible. We are always ready to respond to innovative ideas to help our Conservatory students succeed.

CEO Comments Overall, our programs continue to develop in a positive direction as we strive to increase both financial assistance and volunteer support to UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance students. Our members have been very generous in their willingness to establish new named endowments at the Conservatory. These endowments provide naming opportunities for our members to honor family, friends or former faculty members, while providing much-needed scholarship support for Conservatory students.

Organization Comments The Friends of the Conservatory does not have an executive director; the organization is a volunteer fundraising arm of the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. It has no paid staff, although it receives support from Conservatory and university staff . The Dean of the Conservatory serves in an ex-officio capacity on the board of the Friends of the Conservatory. The Friends’ biggest fundraisers, Crescendo! and the Ovation Awards are not reflected in the audit because the proceeds become part of UMKC’s revenue and as such are reflected in the UMKC financials.
