Mission Statement The mission of the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center is to form the students, faculty and staff of the University of Kansas and others who wish to join in the mission, in the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the Catholic, intellectual, moral, liturgical and spiritual traditions.
Background Statement Prior to 1958, the local Lawrence parish of St. John the Evangelist served the Catholic students at the University of Kansas. As the trend of Catholic students attending KU grew, the Church responded by establishing a Catholic Center. By 1977, it was time to begin new development and discover new resources to respond to the growing phenomenon of Catholic students attending public universities. The Catholic Center was financially dependent upon the Archdiocese and Sunday collections. The year of 1979 saw the beginning of plans to build a chapel and student center to meet the spiritual needs of students and faculty, thus began campaign to raise funds for the establishment of a building. On September 6, 1986, Archbishop Strecker dedicated the new chapel and student center, and a new era in campus ministry had begun. Since then, St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center has continued to develop and grow. Today, it is estimated that more than 4,000 Catholic students attend KU.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement

The Saint Lawrence Center, the Catholic campus ministry at the University of Kansas, is the primary instrument of outreach and formation to the more than 4,000 Catholic students at KU. At a time when 9 out of 10 Catholic college students attend a college or university that is not Catholic, Catholic Campus ministry is of the utmost importance… Over the last fifty-four years, since the founding of the St. Lawrence Center, we have been able to educate and form thousands of university students and professors in the Catholic faith.

St. Lawrence is committed to creating a culture where vocations flourish. Countless vocations to the priesthood, religious life and ministry in this archdiocese and across the county have been heard and answered at the St. Lawrence Center.  While deepening their own formation, students will be better equipped with knowledge and love of that knowledge to share the Gospel with others either within the Church or in the world. I would expect the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center… would have great impact at the University of Kansas, the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and the Church as a whole. Fr. Steven Beseau, the Director of the St. Lawrence Center, and this program has my full support.

Yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann
Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas

Long-Term Success The ultimate goal of our student ministry is to form the students of KU and by the time they graduate and leave, they have a solid foundation to serve throughout the world as strong Catholic leaders.
Program Success Monitored By We measure day to day success through enrollment numbers. We measure long term success through alumni support and updates.
Examples of Program Success Over 1000 students come through the doors of St. Lawrence Center on a weekly basis, and additionally almost half are involved in student ministry.
