Mission Statement MTKC is a professional program committed to bringing quality musical theatre and preparatory training to the Kansas City community.
Background Statement In 1984 Music Theatre for Young People was incorporated in Wichita, Kansas and provided practical performing opportunities for young people in that area. In 1992 a branch of the organization was formed in Kansas City and since then, through main-stage productions, workshops and summer camps, over 1500 young people from the KC area have performed with our group. In 2014, the name of the organization was officially changed to Music Theatre Kansas City in an effort to expand our programming in the Kansas City area.  In 2016, the organization embarked upon a journey to build a theatre to call home. This journey became a reality with the opening of our new theatre in December of 2017.
Impact Statement
Our accomplishments for 2018-2019include:
  1. Celebrating our 2nd season in B&B Live - our new theatre at B&B Shawnee Theatres.
  2. Successful performances of 7 full scale musicals with full orchestras.
  3. Additional income from tickets sales plus donations from new individual donors
  4. Adding new board members who represent community groups including Big Brothers, Big Sisters, CLO and Equality Kansas
  5. Presenting a new work from our workshop company whose purpose is to teach young people how to produce and perform new works.

Our goals for 2018-2019:

  1. Continue to widen diversity on our board and in our audiences.
  2. Work on more public awareness of our program.
  3. Work with other theatre and arts organizations in KC to share space in our new theatre.
  4. Expand our corporate sponsorship program.
  5. Making sure our program is relevant to the needs of the community
Needs Statement
  1. Increasing corporate sponsorship for the 2020 season
  2. Widening audience numbers for each event
  3. Add funds for npublicity and marketing
  4. Increasing public awareness of our program
  5. Increasing ways to set MTKC apart from other similar theatre organizations

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement Music Theatre Kansas City  (MTKC) is embarking on a new era with its official rebranding in October 2014 - exactly 33 years since its founding as Music Theatre for Young People in 1984.  In those years, area youth have embraced the program  because of the professional atmosphere of our programs. The Broadway-like experience includes a wide range of quality musical theatre productions with experienced professionals within a tight one-week rehearsal schedule.   As MTYP, students performed in over a dozen theatre venues in the metropolitan area. Changing out name to MTKC allowed us to expand our programming, thus requiring additional fund raising. For the first time we are actively seeking grants and corporate support to help expand our programs and continue the high standards our students value.
Description Main stage Productions: MTKC Winter Show, Spring Show, Graduating Seniors Show, Annual Alumni Show, and a middle school summer camp. The MTKC Winter and Spring Shows feature approximately 60 performers ranging in age from 7-18 and are rehearsed and performed during the winter and spring semester breaks. The Graduating Seniors Show features approximately 20 graduating seniors from high schools in the Greater Kansas City area and is rehearsed and performed annually in June. The Annual Alumni Show is an opportunity for MTKC alums to return to Kansas City work together to create an original production. The middle school summer camp features approximately 35 students ranging in age from 12-15, and is rehearsed and performed in June. Each of these shows is a main-stage, full scale musical production which is rehearsed and performed over the course of one week. In 2016, MTKC  premiered a new program called MTKC - PRO.  This new arm of the organization features professional actors, many of whom are MTKC alums.
Program Budget $75,000.00
Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Theatrical Performances
Population Served Families, Children Only (5 - 14 years)
Short-Term Success Watching the week-long process of an MTKC show being produced is truly an amazing spectacle. On Day 1 of the process the troupe is a hodgepodge of different personality types with a variety of different reasons for participation. Some children are there for their tenth MTKC show and some are brand new to a theatre experience. When Day 2 hits and the intense process of pulling a Broadway musical together in one week begins, transformation occurs. The 50 individuals who had arrived separately the day before begin to morph into a cohesive unit. Kids who had not known a soul the day before suddenly have 49 new best friends and nervousness turns into a determined grin. Pushing and pulling to make it happen, teamwork is essential. By performance day, they are ready to perform a show and perform it well. As a group these children learn to set goals and achieve them and, as a result, their confidence soars.
Long-Term Success The goal of Music Theatre Kansas City is to create good consumers of musical theatre who will continue to sustain theatre in their community whether through performance, attendance, backstage work or any other means of support. Through training in the skills of musical theatre, students will be prepared for a career in this field, but will also gain skills that will help in any career they choose.  We also offer new performing opportunities for professional actors through our new MTKC Pro division.  With the opening of our theatre space (after 26 years in Kansas City), we now can expand our offerings to meet all of these goals.
Program Success Monitored By Each main stage show is mounted over the course of one week and monitoring the progress of all youths and staff members is of the utmost importance. One show director oversees several counselors and coaches. The children are split up into individual groups throughout the day, each group working on a particular aspect of the show. Since musicals are all written in very similar formats, we have a tried-and-true schedule we follow every time. This schedule allows those involved to keep with the task at hand, ultimately resulting in a full scale musical theatre production of which every person involved can be proud.
Examples of Program Success
The success of Music Theatre Kansas City is measured by the number of students who continue to enroll in the program and by the number of graduating seniors who enroll in musical theatre programs in college. Our statistics are showing that 80% of MTKC graduating seniors are going on to study musical theatre or a related field. In addition, our audiences are increasing by 30%. Over 95% of our students graduate from college.
The last 2 shows of the 2019 season were performed for sold-out audiences.
CEO Comments With the rebranding to MTKC , the addition of MTKC Pro and the opening of B&B Live, we can start to build a new look to the community - one that shows the professionalism of our productions and the impact we can have in the arts in Kansas City.
