Mission Statement Sleepyhead Beds improves the quality of life for children and their families by providing clean, recycled beds and bedding.  And we contribute to the health and environment of our community by sanitizing beds and keeping them out of landfills.
Background Statement
Sleepyhead Beds was founded in 2010 by Monica Starr, a local Kansas City woman.  In her work as a CASA advocate, Monica discovered that foster children could not be returned to their families unless each child had a bed to sleep in.  She reached out to her personal network and began collecting beds to that these kids could get home.  Monica formed a 501(c)3 organization and continued this work using volunteers.  Despite her original focus on children in the CASA system, once word got out about this service she was providing, she began getting multiple calls a day.  She soon discovered the need was much larger than she originally thought.

The organization hired its first professional director in 2013.  Since then we've established a permanent distribution schedule, found warehouse space to operate out of, and began collecting mattresses from the community on a programmatic basis.  Since our inception we have distributed more than 7,000 beds to Kansas City children and their families.
Impact Statement
Accomplishments in 2016:
  • We delivered over 2,000 beds to area children and their immediate families
  • We diverted 120 tons of waste from landfills.
  • We were named a 2016-17 Bacchus Foundation beneficiary.
  • We were a 2016 Impact KC Grantee.
  • Our volunteers logged over 300 hours helping to distribute beds and bedding to our kids.

Goals for 2017
  • Distribute at least 2,000 beds to area children and their families.
  • We plan to keep 130 tons of waste out of area landfills.
  • Find a permanent warehouse space which suits our needs for the next 3-5 years.
  • Increase capacity by at least 10%.
  • Become the source for beds/bedding in the Kansas City area.
Needs Statement
  1. Financial support - Sleepyhead Beds is a small nonprofit operating on less than $150,000 a year.  We receive no federal, state or city funding.  Our donors are local community businesses and individuals.  Funding is our biggest obstacle to increasing organizational capacity.
  2. Space - Sleepyhead Beds is looking for 3,000 - 5,000 feet of warehouse space centrally located in Kansas City.  We are growing rapidly and need this space to increase capacity.
  3. Volunteers - We are always looking for help with our bed delivery program and bed distribution days.  We also need community help with bedding drives.
  4. Vehicle Sponsorship - We are out in the community 5-6 days a week delivering and picking up beds in our 2013 Sprinter.  We are looking for vehicle sponsorship to help defray the fuel and maintenance costs of the Sprinter.  Additionally we'd like these funds to cover the staffing cost of our driver.
  5. Connections - We are trying to build community and would love the opportunity to speak with individuals, businesses, clubs, churches, and other groups.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
2016 was a year of challenge and accomplishment.  We delivered over 2,000 beds to Kansas City children in need.  We did this work with two full time and one part time staff, an annual budget of less than $150,000, and a great crew of passionate volunteers.  In April of 2016 we signed a lease for our first warehouse space.  Located at 2028 Prospect, the space provided us with a larger area in which to store and sanitize mattresses.  The new space allowed us to formalize some of our business operations while also increasing our efficiency.  We also had success with diversifying our funding sources and competing for and securing two significant KC area grants.  Sleepyhead Beds was named a Bacchus beneficiary for the 2016-17 year and also was selected as an Impact KC grant recipient.

The challenges we face in 2017 are consistent with other small, growing nonprofit organizations.  We need a better, larger, more efficient infrastructure in order to meet the need.  We need more financial support.  Currently, the community need is outpacing our ability to meet it.  At our current capacity, we are capped at providing roughly 2,000 beds a year.  Yet the need continues to grow.  Our total wait list is currently over 1,000 children (and their immediate families).  Some families can wait up to 6 months before receiving a bed.

CEO Comments Despite our relatively simple mission, it has been a challenge to create cost effective partnerships and processes.  In 2017 we are focused on creating a model that will address this problem in a more effective and efficient way here in the Kansas City area.  We hope that the work we are doing here will be easily replicated in other cities across the country.  While we've been successful in creating a recognizable 'brand' in Kansas City, we need to solidify partnerships and financial support in order to grow the needed capacity of our organization.
