Mission Statement
Sleepyhead Beds improves the quality of life for children and their families by providing clean, reusable beds and bedding. And we contribute to the health and environment of our community by sanitizing beds and keeping them out of landfills.
Background Statement

Sleepyhead Beds was founded in 2010 by Monica Starr, a local Kansas City resident. While working as a CASA advocate, Monica discovered that children could not come out of the foster system and be reunited with their family of origin unless they had a bed to sleep in. Many did not. In addition to being shocked that these types of situations exist, she also felt it was something she could impact. She mobilized her family, neighbors, and professional network and began collecting beds to distribute to these children so they could go home to their families. As word of her work spread, she started receiving calls from various people in the community who were also in need of beds. She learned no one in Kansas City was providing this service. As a result, Monica established Sleepyhead Beds as a nonprofit organization and in 2011 was granted 501(c)3 status. We continue to collect beds, bedding, and new pillows for Kansas City kids and their immediate families, distributing over 16,000 beds since our founding.

Impact Statement
Accomplishments in 2018:
  • Distributed over 2,700 beds to children and their families in the Kansas City metro area
  • Purchased a box truck to increase donations and awareness of the services provided by Sleepyhead Beds
  • Partnered with Children’s Mercy Hospital to purchase new pack n’ plays and promote safe sleep practices

Goals for 2019:
  • Distribute over 4,000 beds to children and their families in the Kansas City metro area
  • Divert over 200 tons of waste from our city landfills
  • Build upon community connections to include hotels, moving companies, and universities to increase bulk bed donations
  • Partner with other agencies in the community to become a source for beds and bedding for their clients
Needs Statement
  • Financial Support – Sleepyhead Beds is a small nonprofit that receives no federal, state, or city funding. We rely on contributions from individual donors, local foundations, and our annual fundraiser. Funding remains our biggest obstacle in increasing capacity.
  • Volunteers – We are always looking for volunteers to help us with our Saturday Distribution Days. We also look to our community to host bedding drives.
  • Community Connections – We continue to try to build partnerships in our community. We would love the opportunity to speak with individuals, businesses, clubs, churches, and other groups.
  • Beds & Bedding – The need for our services in the Kansas City community continues to grow. We are always looking for gently-used beds and bedding donations to redistribute to children and their families.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
Sleepyhead Beds reached a new milestone in 2018 by distributing over 2,700 beds to children and their families in the Kansas City metro area. We could not do this work without our dedicated staff, a passionate group of volunteers, and our generous community. Throughout 2018, we strengthened out partnerships with other companies and organizations to increase both the services provided and operational efficiency. We received two capacity building grants from the H&R Block Foundation and the Hall Family Foundation. With the financial support of Children’s Mercy Hospital, we also purchased new pack n’ plays to promote safe sleep practices to families. In addition to this, Crowley Furniture donated 60 new sets totaling over $12,000 in value. We continued to be amazed by the support of our community.

In 2019, we are positioned to distribute 4,000 beds. We continued to be amazed by the need for our services. Currently, we have over 1,100 families on our waitlist to receive beds. While Sleepyhead Beds continues to grow, the community need is outpacing our ability to meet it. We predominantly help children and their families living at or below the poverty line. Many are coming out of foster care situations or recovering from other traumatic life experiences. Sleepyhead Beds remains the only organization in Kansas City solely focused on this particular need. We are working hard to ensure restful nights of sleep for children and their families. In order to eradicate this problem in Kansas City, we need financial support.

CEO Comments

2018 was a milestone for Sleepyhead Beds by distributing over 2,700 beds to children and their families in the Kansas City metro area. As we enter our second year of capacity building, we continue to focus on creating effective partnerships with other organizations and companies in our community. We do this in hopes of creating a model that can be replicated in other cities across the country. While we have created a name for ourselves in the Kansas City, we find the need of our community surpasses our ability to meet it. For 2019, we are positioned to distribute 4,000 beds. This can only be done by solidifying our partnerships and growing support for our organization.
