Mission Statement

Summit Art, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to promoting visual arts through mentoring, skill advancement, and exhibition opportunities by providing workshops and events for all ages, thus enhancing one’s quality of life through visual art.

Background Statement

Founded in September 2004, Summit Art is a membership-based, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Summit Art is operated by our membership, with member-elected officers and an independent governing board.

We began as collaboration among artists to network, to display and sell their work. Lee's Summit Parks and Recreation gave Summit Art the first opportunity to display artist’s works at Legacy Park Community Center. Another collaboration developed when Saint Luke’s East Hospital agreed to furnish display space and become a sponsor.

In 2008, Bob and Linda Netterville established GOT Art Gallery at 18 SW 3rd Street in Downtown Lee's Summit. In 2010, Summit Art relocated to GOT Art Gallery and took over gallery operations.  At that time we expanded our community outreach structure including classes, workshops, monthly art exhibits, artist mentoring and promotion.

Member dues, gallery sales, workshop fees, as well as donations and grants, sustain us. Guided by our mission, vision and values, we have grown to a membership of over 100 juried artists.

Our members travel from within a 50-mile radius to participate in our meetings and activities. We are proud that we have grown and developed into one of the most active visual arts organizations in the Metropolitan Kansas City area.

Summit Art welcomes all artists and art students to become members to cultivate their talents, network with peers, display their art, and volunteer in our community activities.

We anticipate a bright future with a focus on encouraging an appreciation for the value of art in everyone’s daily lives. In addition, Summit Art is a member of or partner with the following organizations:

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement

Summit Art members desire to transform lives through visual arts. We want to provide opportunities to enrich people's lives through access to art exhibits and education to increase the cultural health of our community.

Our organization is dedicated to expanding arts opportunities to all members of our community, regardless of means. We hope to offer a substantial number of art classes to low-income senior citizens, under-privileged children and other under-served populations who might otherwise be unable to enjoy the gift of art.

Our Summit Art Festival, SAF, is a high quality fine art event managed by artists’ with 30 years of event experience. Our mission, provide a successful fine art event with great experiences for both artists and patrons. SAF attracts art patrons from the entire KC metro area.

The 201 festival will be October 7 – 9th. Summit Art and Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street manage the event. We have many regional media and businesses providing support, including advertising. Our three-day festival of fine art provides visitors with diverse talents of world-class national and regional artists.
Beyond the art exhibits, this event offers food, music, a kid’s zone, local high schools’ art exhibit, and interactive art experiences. There is something fresh for the whole family.

Short-Term Success

With each succeeding year our attendance increases, our past year exceeded 25,000 patrons. Patron and artist compliments reinforce our business model for the festival. Our patrons’ comments articulate that they are thrilled to have a high quality fine arts festival in eastern Jackson County.

Long-Term Success

Our ultimate goal for this program is to bring national and locally recognized fine artists to our Summit Art Festival event in eastern Jackson County. This event is planned to have patron appeal to both our local communities and the metro Kansas City area. We create an ambiance that supports our patrons experience for the purchase of artwork, viewing pleasure and interaction with the artists’.

We are passionate to keep the quality of the exhibiting artists’ at the festival high and include only fine art, no crafts. Incremental improvements are implemented each year to increase both the artist and patron experience.
Program Success Monitored By

We measure our success using the following metrics; progressive increases in attendance, artist sales, overall artist satisfaction, and their desire to return to the festival. These metrics are based on responses to an anonymous artist’s survey taken at each year’s event.

1) The 2014 event attendance was estimated to exceed 23,000 people.
2) Artist sales have grown to $1279.00 average per booth, a 21% growth over the previous year.

3) Our artists’ overall satisfaction rate increased by 17% from 2013 to 2014.

4) Artists’ whom indicate their desire to return, grew at rate a rate of about 3% 2013 to 2014. We currently jury all applicants, not all may return year over year.

Further, our booth quantity has grown to over 90 spaces. These include of booth packages for some emerging artists. This matches up well with the physical event space layout. We refine the event layout for improvements each year. We are also exploring the possibilities of physical event expansion.

Examples of Program Success
  • I have exhibited at LAWMF since the very first show. This show has  evolved into a must show for me. The organization of the show has continued to grow and the needs of the participating artist are listened to by the staff. Every year the show has gotten better and I look forward to showing again this year.--KED
  • "The 2009 LAWMF was my first time to exhibit at an art fair. We were close to the music and enjoyed the ambiance. It was an excellent opportunity to visit with fellow artists, friends and neighbors." -- JTB
  • “I attended the art fair last October and had a great time. My experience with the show last year was that it was my most enjoyable show that I had participated in last year. Despite the fact that it was the first year, the organization was fantastic and the people even more so. Sales were better than I thought they would be. The combination of the music and the fine weather made it all the more enjoyable and I look forward to participating again this year.”--Bryan B

Short-Term Success We have had parents in awe of the programs that we offer for kids’ evenings, weekends and summer schedules. The response to offerings for art for home-schooled children has also been amazing. Adult programs have also had excellent response; they include art history, painting/drawing classes and recognized artist workshops.
Long-Term Success For the public to be aware of the gallery as a destination point for both fine art for viewing and sale. Further, that the public and artists utilize the gallery classes and training opportunities to nurture and develop art skills as individuals including within their families.
Program Success Monitored By Success for Got Art Gallery on Third is measured in three metrics. First, advertising for both artist and public awareness. Second, filling kids/adults art education and training classes. Third, success in providing both juried fine art for sale and viewing pleasure.
Examples of Program Success

Many of our classes for both kids and adults routinley sold out. Recent 2014 examples are the Adam Clague Painting workshop this past spring. Children’s classes for summer mini-camps.
