Mission Statement
Donnelly College is a Catholic Institution of higher education that seeks to continue the mission of Jesus Christ in our time by making the love of God tangible in our world. Specifically, the mission of Donnelly College is to provide education and community services with personal concern for the needs and abilities of each student, especially those who might not otherwise be served.
Background Statement

Donnelly College began with a bold vision: To create a Catholic college with a special focus on expanding access to higher education. In 1949, the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica and the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas made this shared vision a reality. Nearly 70 years later, Donnelly’s mission, students and operating model stand apart in higher education. At Donnelly, access means more than affordability. It also means an urban core location, an open admissions policy, program options to meet students’ needs, and an opportunity to explore faith. Our mission is motivated by a commitment to help every person realize their God-given potential. We rely on the generosity of our supporters to achieve this mission.

For a small college, Donnelly offers a wide range of academic programs, including:

  • Bachelor's degree programs in Organizational Leadership and Information Systems
  • Associate degree programs, including an Associate of Arts program for inmates at the Lansing Correctional Facility
  • Practical Nursing and Certified Nurse Aide programs
  • "Success First" and "Intensive English" programs for students needing intensive instruction in reading and writing or English as a Second Language classes
  • A Gateway to College program designed to increase graduation rates and provide college credit for students who have dropped out of high school or fallen significantly behind their peers
  • College readiness, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) enrichment and dual credit programs for middle and high school youth
Impact Statement

Our top accomplishments this past year included:

  1. Our Board of Directors approved new institutional vision and values statements as well as a $25 million campus master plan that will transform Donnelly's academic buildings and overall campus. 
  2. We served over 1000 students, including more than 450 students in degree and certificate programs and we awarded 16 bachelor's degrees, 25 associate degrees (including three associate degrees awarded to graduates from our program at Lansing Correctional Facility), and 25 Practical Nursing Certificates.
  3. We recognized eight graduates of our innovative Gateway to College program. Through a partnership with the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools, these Gateway students completed their high school diploma requirements at Donnelly while earning an average of 18.75 credits toward a college degree.
  4. We continue to provide college access for students who are underrepresented in higher education: 84% of Donnelly students are racial or ethnic minorities, 81% are first-generation college students and 57% have household incomes below $30,000 a year. 
  5. We grew enrollment 29% (by headcount) between fall 2015 and fall 2016 and we increased fall-to-spring retention from 70% (in 2015-16) to 75% (in 2016-17). 
 
 
Our strategic goals for the coming year include:
  1.  Secure capital funds to move forward with the our campus master plan.
  2. Continue to grow enrollment and improve student retention. 
  3. Develop and implement systematic processes for collecting, analyzing and using assessment data to guide institutional planning and to improve student outcomes.
  4. Complete the strategic planning process  and obtain Board approval for next five year Strategic Plan (2017-2021).
  5. Secure final approval to add an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program to allow Practical Nursing graduates to pursue their RN at Donnelly.
Needs Statement

There are several pressing needs to ensure the future success of Donnelly College and its services to urban Kansas City:

  1. Implement the new campus master plan, which includes a) improving the capital infrastructure of the campus to more effectively support student learning, and b) growing our endowment to enhance long-term stability.
  2. Raise general operating support ($1,083,995) so that we can continue to keep tuition low for all students and raise scholarship donations ($350,000) so we can continue to help our most financially-needy students overcome financial barriers to postsecondary education.
  3. Fully align strategic planning, budgeting and assessment.
  4. Raise awareness of the college across the metropolitan area.
  5. Eliminate overall salary gap for faculty and staff relative to established benchmarks and increase professional development investment.

Although Donnelly serves students from throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area, the campus is located in the urban core of Wyandotte County, Kansas, where poverty rates are significantly higher and educational attainment significantly lower than in surrounding counties. Approximately one in five families (19.1%) in Wyandotte County live in poverty compared to 13.5% of families in urban Jackson County, Missouri and just 4.0% of families in neighboring Johnson County, Kansas. Similarly, in Wyandotte County, only 15.9% of adults age 25 and older have bachelor’s degrees and only 22% have two-year degrees— compared to 33.7% of adults with bachelor’s degrees and 41.2% with associate degrees across the metro.

Our students amaze me. Many face immense challenges in their day-to-day lives, but, as they pursue their “daily goals,” they remain dedicated to themselves, their families, and their education as they seek to better their lives and communities. Donnelly College as an institution also has a list of daily goals we work hard to accomplish. Among them are offering high quality academic programs, increasing enrollment, providing a nurturing environment for all people seeking a higher education and preparing this community’s next generation of highly diverse leaders. But perhaps more importantly, our daily goals are centered around providing our students with personal attention, care, counsel, friendship and whatever else they need to persevere. This is the work we have been called to do: to be an institution that lives for others.

Donnelly has offered associate degrees since its founding and added a Practical Nursing program in 2008 and bachelor degree programs in Organizational Leadership in 2008 and Information Systems in 2013. In addition to providing students in the urban core with an opportunity to pursue a postsecondary credential close to home, Donnelly's academic programs are designed to educate and prepare our next generation of workplace and community leaders. According to the Mid-America Regional Council, over the next ten years, the Kansas City metropolitan area will experience an 11% increase in jobs for Practical and Registered Nurses, a 17.7% increase in jobs requiring an associate degree and a 14.8% increase in jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree.

Short-Term Success Our associate degree programs are designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation for continued study or living-wage employment. Our bachelor's degree programs include a capstone project that requires students to apply their knowledge to a real-world project and our Practical Nursing program pairs classroom and clinical opportunities for hands on learning and skills practice to prepare students to work as nurses in clinics, hospitals, home healthcare agencies and long-term care facilities. All Donnelly's academic programs foster analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, and values exploration so that students can become lifelong learners and "the best versions of themselves."
Long-Term Success

The long-term goal of Donnelly's degree and certificate programs is to transform lives by helping low-income and underserved students earn the educational credentials and skills they need to lift themselves and their children out of poverty. U.S. Census Bureau data suggest that, over a lifetime, someone with just a high school diploma will earn half a million dollars less than someone with an associate degree and $1 million less than someone with a bachelor’s degree. By contrast, when low-income students have access to higher education, they can support themselves and their families and contribute to the local economy. The Mid-America Regional Council projects that, by 2020, two of every three jobs in the Kansas City metro will require education beyond high school.

In addition to tracking retention and graduation data for all programs, Donnelly assesses student learning through an annual assessment process that evaluates course grades, performance on capstone projects and scores on comprehensive national exams such as the Proficiency Profile (for associate and bachelor degree students) and the NCLEX-PN licensing exam (for Practical Nursing graduates). Donnelly also assesses key student learning outcomes in each academic and co-curricular program on an annual basis and conducts a formal Program Review every three years.  
Examples of Program Success

After becoming a mother at age 17, Maria thought she might have to give up her dream of attending college. Fortunately, a friend told her about Donnelly’s affordable tuition, small classes and individual attention from instructors. After enrolling at Donnelly, Maria discovered a passion for science and became involved in Phi Theta Kappa and the Bloch Scholars program. Maria earned an Associate of Science from Donnelly in 2005 and went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Research College of Nursing/Rockhurst University. Maria currently works as a nurse at Children’s Mercy Hospital and serves as Vice President of the Kansas City chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. Maria credits Donnelly with helping her balance schoolwork, a part-time job and parenting: “Donnelly was such a nurturing environment. The instructors and staff understood non-traditional students and never allowed life’s curve balls to hinder our educational path.”

Description

Donnelly's Student Success Supports program provides free tutoring, Intrusive Advising and Supplemental Instruction—where peer tutors provide academic support in challenging courses. For students that score below the level for college readiness, Donnelly offers a "Success First" developmental reading and writing program, an "Intensive English" program for non-native English speakers and academic coaching and weekly tutoring for Conditional Admission students. Success Navigator testing helps Advisors customize support for incoming freshmen and transfer students, a Career Resource Center helps connect students with internships and employment opportunities, and a full-time Licensed Professional Counselor provides mental health services.  All faculty and staff use an Early Alert System to refer students needing assistance to appropriate resources, including a campus food pantry. A vibrant Campus Ministry program encourages all students to explore their faith.

Short-Term Success
A key indicator of the effectiveness of our Student Success Supports program is the fact that more than 90% of our graduates have overcome multiple risk factors to earn a certificate or degree. We track the percentage of our graduates that are minority students and/or first-generation college students. We also track the percentage of graduates who started their college journeys in developmental education classes (our "Success First" program), as Conditional Admission students or working on English language skills.
 
Because of the many challenges our students face, another key indicator of program success is improved student retention. Over the past three years, our Student Success Supports program has improved fall-to-spring retention from 59% (in 2014-15) to 70% (in 2015-16) and 75% in (in 2016-17).  
Long-Term Success Donnelly students are capable and hardworking, yet, due to precarious economic and family situations, under-resourced high schools and emerging English skills, they need significantly more supports than the average college student. The vast majority (81%) are also first-generation college students who do not have anyone in their families to help them navigate the higher education environment. The goal of all student support programming is to help Donnelly students balance academic demands with work and family commitments so that problems with childcare, housing, transportation or finances do not derail students on their educational journeys. Through our robust Student Success Supports program, Donnelly provides the nurturing, supportive environment these at-risk students need to persist in the educational programs and achieve college and career success.

The effectiveness of Donnelly's student support programming is measured through an annual assessment process. Each year, the Director of Student Success completes a comprehensive report detailing prior year achievements and setting target outcomes for the following academic year. In addition to tracking retention and graduation data and trends by program and student subgroup, these reports also include the results of student surveys about use of student support services and their impact on academic accomplishment. Students evaluate the impact of tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Intrusive Advising, Career Services, Academic Coaching, and Counseling Center services and referrals.

Examples of Program Success

In 2009, when she was 21, Marika moved to the United States from her native Bhutan and started her educational journey at a local community college. After mastering basic English skills, Marika enrolled in Donnelly’s developmental education program (Success First), where she worked hard to improve her reading and writing skills. Once Marika was admitted to Donnelly’s associate degree program, she began focusing on political science classes. She graduated with her Associate of Arts in May, 2017 and plans to enroll at Park University to complete a Political Science bachelor’s degree. Marika is grateful for the leadership experience she has gained at Donnelly, including the opportunity to serve as President of Student Senate. Ultimately, Marika hopes to work in the Unified Government of Kansas City, Kansas/Wyandotte County. With her enthusiasm, drive and work ethic, Marika is very capable of achieving her dream of running for mayor some day.

Description

Gateway to College at Donnelly is an innovative program aimed at increasing graduation rates and opening doors to post-secondary study among Kansas City Kansas Public School students ages 16-20 who have dropped out of high school or are significantly behind in credits for their age. Launched in 2013 in partnership with KCKPS and the Gateway to College National Network, Donnelly’s Gateway to College program allows students who have not been successful in traditional high school settings to complete their high school diplomas while simultaneously earning credit toward a college degree.

Short-Term Success

We have set the following goals for our Gateway to College program in 2017-18:

  • Objective #1: First-semester success (Note: Gateway students achieve first-semester success if they pass all reading and writing courses with a B or better or if their attendance, classwork and placement test scores indicate that they are prepared to transition “Success First” or introductory-level college courses the following semester.)
  • Target: We expect 30 Gateway students to achieve first-semester success in 2017-18.
  • Objective #2: High school completion 
  • Target: We expect at least 15 students to receive their diplomas in May, 2018.
  • Objective #3: College credit accumulation
  • Target: We expect our 2018 Gateway graduates to have earned an average of 20 college credits by the time they receive their high school diplomas.
Long-Term Success

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over a lifetime, a high school dropout will earn $272,000 less than a high school graduate, $700,000 less than someone with an associate degree and $1.3 million less than someone with a bachelor's degree. Beyond the economic impact on dropouts themselves, educational failure affects multiple generations as dropouts pass on the burdens of a lower economic status to their children. Donnelly's Gateway to College program interrupts this destructive cycle by helping those students with the greatest barriers to high school and college completion earn the credentials they need to secure stable jobs and contribute to the community. Donnelly celebrated its first Gateway graduate in May, 2015 followed by four graduates in May, 2016 and eight graduates in May, 2017. By the time they received their diplomas, Donnelly's eight 2017 graduates had earned an average of 18.75 credits toward a college degree. 

Program Success Monitored By

As a member of the Gateway to College National Network, Donnelly reports total program enrollment and progress toward key program outcomes annually to the Network. The Network then issues a report comparing Donnelly’s program achievements to results at other network institutions, including those in our cohort (i.e. schools that started programs the same semester as Donnelly—fall 2013). Internally, the Gateway to College program staff completes an annual report each year and a formal Program Review every three years. In addition to comparing Donnelly’s actual annual program outcomes with national benchmarks, these reports detail significant local program supports and challenges, ongoing and new partnerships being developed, service learning and career development opportunities provided to students and any changes in assessment procedures from previous years. 

Examples of Program Success

Although Juliana was an excellent high school student, she dropped out during her junior year at Sumner Academy. Her father had recently become incarcerated and her mother became neglectful. Juliana had given birth to a son at the end of her sophomore year and she couldn’t keep up her schoolwork while raising her son without family support. Once her mother also became incarcerated, Juliana decided that she wanted a better life for herself and her son and she applied to Donnelly’s Gateway to College Program. By the time she received her high school diploma in May, 2016, Juliana had earned 44 college credits. She continued as a traditional college student in our associate degree program and received her Associate of Arts degree in May, 2017.

Description Donnelly's institutional scholarship program allows the College to achieve its mission of offering an opportunity for higher education to low-income individuals, and particularly "those who might not otherwise be served.” By helping to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and living expenses not covered by federal and state need-based assistance, Donnelly's institutional scholarship program helps lower the financial barriers that too often keep low-income individuals from obtaining college degrees.

For the 2017-18 academic year, Donnelly anticipates raising and disbursing at least $350,000 in institutional scholarships averaging $1,750 to approximately 200 financially-needy students. This financial assistance will help low-income students overcome the financial barriers that might otherwise prevent them from persisting in their academic programs and earning their degrees. Although most of our financially-disadvantaged students receive federal Pell grants, at a maximum award of $5,920 for 2017-18, these awards do not even the cost of full-time tuition, let alone costs for fees, books, housing, food, transportation and childcare. Donnelly’s institutional scholarships help bridge this gap, reducing the number of hours students must work and the need for large student loans. This helps Donnelly students graduate in a timely manner without crippling levels of student loan debt.

Long-Term Success Donnelly recognizes that the future economic health and advancement of a community is tied to the educational level of its citizens. Numerous studies have shown that college graduates earn higher wages, make greater contributions to tax revenue and are more likely to volunteer, vote, and maintain healthy lifestyles. Donnelly is committed to making benefits of postsecondary education available to all, particularly low-income students who struggle to afford college. By providing an affordable, accessible opportunity for higher education to urban core students whose average household income is just $27,000, Donnelly hopes to change disparities in educational attainment that leave too many capable and hardworking students unable to gain the credentials they need to secure good jobs and contribute to the community.  
Program Success Monitored By Donnelly evaluates its financial and institutional scholarship aid programs on an ongoing basis. To continue to be eligible for need-based or merit-based scholarship assistance, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress. This means that students must complete a minimum of 66% of all credit hours attempted and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA. The Financial Aid Office reviews student progress at the end of each term to ensure continued eligibility. Those not making satisfactory academic progress are placed on Financial Aid Warning and given one term to meet the standards of academic progress. Those failing to meet the satisfactory progress standards the next term are placed on Financial Aid Suspension and are no longer eligible for financial aid.
Examples of Program Success During the 2016-17 academic year, Donnelly raised and disbursed a total of $353,682 in institutional scholarships to 199 unduplicated students. Although the average award amount was just $1,777, in many cases, this assistance was the difference between a student being able to stay in school or needing to drop out. 
Description  Since 2001, Donnelly has offered an associate degree program at the Lansing Correctional Facility. Inmates may take up to twelve credits each semester and can earn an associate degree in two and half to three years. Numerous studies have shown that education is the single most effective tool to reduce recidivism and prevent individuals from returning to a life of crime after their release.Because Donnelly is committed to providing this program as an extension of our focus on serving "those who might not otherwise be served."

Long-Term Success
Earning a college degree is the single most effective tool to prevent individuals from re-offending and returning to prison after their release. Giving inmates the opportunity to further their education while incarcerated can transform their lives and the lives of their families and can save countless taxpayer dollars by drastically reducing recidivism rates. 
Program Success Monitored By Students in the Lansing program are held to the same academic standards as our traditional students. We monitor their class grades and track their progress toward their degrees. With the assistance of the Lansing Warden and Deputy Warden we also follow our Lansing students after they are released from prison. Some come to campus to complete their degrees while others return to the workforce. Donnelly receives semi-annual reports from Lansing on the current status of all former inmates who have taken part in the program. 
Examples of Program Success Since 2001, 23 men have earned their associate degrees in the Lansing program and more than 500 have completed classes. To date, just 2% of the Donnelly students who have been released have returned to prison. Comparatively, according to the National Institute of Justice, 68% of all males released from state prisons return to the prison system within three years.

Monsignor Stuart W. Swetland, S.T.D., was ordained a priest in 1991 for the Diocese of Peoria, IL. He received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the United States Naval Academy. Elected a Rhodes Scholar in 1981, he entered the Catholic Church while studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford. He has a B.A. and M.A. from Oxford; a M.Div. and M.A. from Mount St. Mary’s Seminary; and his S.T.L. and S.T.D. from the Pontifical Lateran University having studied at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, DC. He has an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Benedictine College in Atchison, KS.

He currently serves as the seventh President of Donnelly College in Kansas City, KS, where he is also Professor of Leadership and Christian Ethics. Previously, he served as Vice President for Catholic Identity and Mission and held the Archbishop Flynn Chair of Christian Ethics at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He has also served as the Executive Director of the Center for the Advancement of Catholic Higher Education, the Executive Secretary for the Fellowship of Catholic Scholars and Theological Advisor to the Illinois Catholic Conference.

Msgr. Swetland was named a Prelate of Honor in 2000 by Saint John Paul II and is a Knight Commander for the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchure and a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.

Msgr. Swetland hosts the television show Catholicism on Campus on EWTN and a weekday radio show, Go Ask Your Father, on Relevant Radio.

Prior to becoming Donnelly’s Vice President of Academic Affairs in 2015, Mr. Leite served as Vice President of Instruction/Chief Academic Officer at Salina Area Technical College, as Dean of Career and Technical Education at Butler Community College and as Assistant Dean of Academics and Associate Professor of Computer Information Systems at Kansas State University at Salina. He completed doctoral coursework in Curriculum and Instruction at Kansas State University and he holds an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Higher Education and Community College Teaching from Pittsburgh State University. He also earned a Master of Management and a Master of Management Information Systems from Friends University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Catholic University, Campinas, Brazil. Mr. Leite is responsible for overseeing all Academic and Student Affairs programming at Donnelly. He also chairs the Administrative Council and the Assessment Committee.

Ms. Hicks joined Donnelly College in 2016 as the Vice President of Business Affairs and Title IX Coordinator. She has extensive experience in business affairs, audits, and financial services in higher education, business and government settings. Ms. Hicks holds a master’s degree from Arkansas State University and is a Certified Public Accountant. At Donnelly, Ms. Hicks is responsible for all accounting and business office functions of the College and she also oversees Financial Aid, Human Resources, Campus Facilities, Maintenance and Security. She is the Treasurer for the Donnelly College Board of Directors and serves as the primary staff liaison to the Board’s Finance Committee. She also chairs the Donnelly College Strategic Planning Committee.

After receiving her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia, Ms. Buckley worked as an editor at Sosland Publishing Company for five years before coming to Donnelly as a grant writer in 2004. In 2005, Ms. Buckley became Director of Development and, in 2013, she was promoted to Vice President for Advancement. Ms. Buckley serves as Secretary for the Donnelly College Board of Directors and she supports the Board’s Executive Committee and serves as the staff liaison to the Development Committee and the Mission and Trusteeship Committee. As Vice President for Advancement, she is responsible for all of the College’s Marketing, Alumni Relations, Annual Fund, Grants and Major Gift efforts.

Father John Melnick, S.S.A., B.A., B.Ed., M.Div., S.T.L. joined Donnelly’s faculty 2009 in and was named the Vice President of Spirituality and Mission in 2013. Prior to coming to Donnelly, Father John served as pastor in a number of diverse parishes and taught at various high schools in Toronto, Ontario, at St. Augustine Seminary (at Toronto School of Theology), and at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In addition to teaching in Donnelly’s theology department, Father John oversees Donnelly’s Campus Ministry program and serves as a Catholic Chaplain to the College. As such, he is approved and appointed by the Archbishop of Kansas City, in Kansas to provide spiritual guidance to the community and to foster faith at the college. His duties include celebrating Mass and the Sacraments; officiating at worship services; counseling students, staff and faculty; organizing group activities; and developing and overseeing Campus Ministry programming.

On February 23, 2017, the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) placed Donnelly College on probation. HLC took this action because it determined that the College does not meet HLC's Criteria for Accreditation related to assessment of student learning and institutional resources. Since that time, our senior leadership, faculty and staff have been working diligently to correct the deficiencies identified as part of the probation decision. As we continue working to improve our academic offerings, campus experience and students' success, the College remains committed to securing a bright future and building upon our legacy as an accessible, affordable Catholic college that is transformative for our students and our community. 

The College's leadership intends to be as transparent as possible during the remediation process. Donnelly College has been accredited since 1958 and the College remains fully-accredited while on probation. Our next accreditation visit will be in September, 2018.

Donnelly is sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and the Archbishop serves as chairperson of the Membership Board. The Membership Board provides authority for a governing Board consisting of up to 34 Directors who collectively set policy and oversee the operation of the College. The College recently increased the number of seats on the Board of Directors to include representatives of diverse industries, religions, geographical locations and income levels as well as representatives of diverse racial and ethnic groups.

Donnelly’s Board currently consists of 28 Directors dedicated to providing educational opportunities to underserved students in the urban core of Kansas City, Kansas. Board members create a vision for the College through approval of an annual Strategic Plan and provide leadership to all areas of the College through service on committees that include Academic & Student Affairs, Mission & Trusteeship, Development, Finance, Building and Executive. The entire Board meets quarterly and board members serve three-year terms. Our current Board includes three alumni. Board members have an average length of service of six years.

Campaign Purpose Donnelly's Transformations Campaign will fund new construction and renovation of existing facilities and will grow our endowment for both programs and scholarships. Phase one (completed in 2013) involved building our Community Event Center. Phase two is currently in progress and includes renovations to two floors of Marian Hall to recapture 10,000 additional square feet of classroom, lab and office space. Phase three will include demolition of a former residence hall to create additional parking and construction of a new three-story building to replace the seven-story former hospital facility that currently houses our library as well as the majority of our classrooms and offices. A fourth and final phase will include demolition of the seven-story facility to create green space and a campus quad.

Since Donnelly’s earliest days, keeping college affordable has been a hallmark of our mission. At its opening ceremony in 1950, Bishop Donnelly stressed that Donnelly College was being founded “to create a Catholic college without needless expense." Although keeping tuition low became more challenging over the years as Donnelly moved from a faculty of priests and nuns to a primarily lay workforce, it remains one of the most important ways that we continue to promote access for low-income, urban core students. Instead of charging our students to cover rising costs for facilities, staff, technology, student support services and regulatory compliance, we leverage grants from individuals and private foundations as well as federal funds that we are eligible for as a Hispanic-Serving and Minority-Serving Institution. This allows us to invest almost $11,000 a year in educating and supporting each student, while charging just under $7,000 for full-time tuition. As a result of these efforts, Donnelly has been recognized for the past five years as one of the 100 most affordable private four-year colleges in the Country by the U.S. Department of Education. Our tuition is in line with or lower than many public four-year institutions and much lower than other Catholic institutions. According to the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, the average annual tuition at Catholic institutions was $31,489 in 2016-17. Clearly, costs like these would be an insurmountable barrier for Donnelly’s student population, whose average annual household income is just $27,000. In addition to promoting access, keeping tuition low reduces the number of hours students must work and the need to take out large loans to finance their education. This allows Donnelly students to graduate in a timely manner, without burdensome levels of student loan debt.
