Mission Statement Mid America Freedom Band provides opportunities for instrumental music lovers to share their passion of performance with the diverse community of Kansas City. It strives for excellence while promoting equality, fostering education, and celebrating the joy shared through music.
Background Statement
Alan Day and Zachary Parker began discussing the formation of a band during the summer of 2001. Originally planned as a senior Drum & Bugle Corp, the founders decided to shift focus into becoming a performing musical organization focused on Kansas City's LGBTA (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transsexual, and Ally) community. Mid American Freedom Band held its first rehearsal on April 18, 2002, at the Lesbian & Gay Community Center in Kansas City with four musicians.

On November 15, 2003, MAFB, under the leadership of Zachary Parker, gave its first concert, “Journeys,” with only 13 local musicians aided by St. Louis’ Band Together. The same year the organization became a full member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association. The band that once numbered barely a half dozen now has over 85 members which include a volunteer rest section, concert band, marching band, jazz band, small ensembles and flag corps.
Impact Statement

Accomplishments:

  1. Two concert performances for the first time during Christmas and spring concerts. Allowing for patrons to choice what time worked better for them and allowed the band to perform in front of a larger audience.
  2. First Educational performance in collaboration with the National WWI Museum and Memorial in February of 2017.
  3. Successful bid and approval for hosting the 2018 LGBA National Conference in Kansas City. Scheduled May 23-27, 2018
  4. Third year successfully commissioning a new work of music this year from LA composer Justin Raines.
Goals:
  1. Attract additional audience and membership while maintaining high artistic quality
  2. Find new revenue sources
  3. Remain financially sound
  4. Hosting the Lesbian and Gay Band Association’s 2018 conference in Kansas City, MO May 2018
Needs Statement
  1. Funding to cover compensated Artistic Director and Mighty Mo Combo conductor to help refine and improve overall musical sound.
  2. Funds for additional instruments that musicians could not otherwise afford including percussion equipment.
  3. Funds/grants to offset production costs to keep all concerts affordable to general public.
  4. Add marketing to encourage audience growth and achievement of attendance goals.
  5. Secure venues with a stage large enough to accommodate our growing membership of 85+ musicians and accommodate our growing audience.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement
Mid America Freedom Band prides itself on being the only community band in the heart of Kansas City. Our central location allows us to pull membership, as well as audience, from all of Kansas City’s neighborhoods and surrounding communities. The 2014-2015 season marks our 12th season, and follows significant growth within the organization. Once just a concert band, we are that and much more. The Mighty Mo Combo is a jazz ensemble offshoot from within the group and is steadfastly building a reputation of lively performances and attaining many performance invites. We've also added a new string orchestra. Growth presents challenges the board welcomes. We may soon outgrow our concert performance venue. Our new subsidiaries have increased our operating costs. And we are hiring our first paid staff member in our otherwise all-volunteer organization. Staff training in strategic planning and sustainable fundraising insures we will continue to meet our long-term goals; and continue to share the joy of music with the greater Kansas City community.

"From my very first rehearsal with the Mid America Freedom Band, I knew this was an organization that could really make a difference in the LGBT community in Kansas City. Not only was I surrounded by talented performers, but also passionate people. People that were there for each other, and willing to go that extra mile for what they believed in. These weekly rehearsals give band members a chance to meet with friends, and have a support system that many of them don’t find in their daily lives. I knew I wanted to be more than just a performing member. It was then I decided to volunteer my time on the Executive Board as well, and was voted Board Chair. This was a chance for me to not only contribute my passion for playing and performing, but my drive to help make a difference. The LGBT community in Kansas City is growing, and that is thanks to wonderful organizations such as Mid America Freedom Band that help promote not only the community as a whole, but help to create safe spaces for people to perform and create, and feel safe to just be who they are with no social stigmas attached. This group participates in many local events around Kansas City, such as the Brookside St. Patrick’s Day Parade, KC Fringe Festival, and Mayor Sly James’ Turn the Page KC program. By participating in wonderful community events such as these, we are able to not only give back to this great city, but reach others and help spread words of love and acceptance in and for the ever growing LGBT and allied community of Kansas City." - Jessica Riggins, Board Chair
Programs
Description

Concerts and outreach is our primary program for this Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transsexual and Ally (LGBTA) community band. MAFB produces three major concerts as well as outreach events and parades.  The groups Mighty Mo Combo (Jazz Band) also produce a series of outreach concerts though the greater KC metropolitan area. The marching pep band performs at local parades.

This season's concert band events include:

  • Of Alchemy and Science—October 2016
  • Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire—December 2016
  • World War I Educational Concert—Spring 2017
  • Generating and Overcoming—May 2017
Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Musical Performances
Population Served Lesbian, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgendered, General/Unspecified,
Short-Term Success MAFB has diversified our outreach by adding a new flag corp and Mighty MO Jazz Ensemble and recently formed String Orchestra all to perform in stages and venues too small for our full concert band.
Long-Term Success Our programming is for our community at large to include our audience and members. Our goal is to continue to provide quality concerts for the community with a finical foundation so we do not have to charge for these concerts.
Program Success Monitored By
We measure the success in the following ways:
  • Audience attendance
  • Donations
  • Direct feedback from audience.
  • Membership satisfaction and growth.
Examples of Program Success
  • MAFB has grown the band from 19 members to 50 playing members. During the same time, what was an audience of less than 100 now comprises approximately 250 patrons per event. The group’s over-all music quality has improved drastically.
  • A new member stated: “This is the first community band my partner and I were able to be ourselves and be fully accepted for who we are.”
