Statements
Mission Statement Sass MoKan’s mission is to support the families and community affected by suicide, to educate the community about suicide awareness and prevention, and to combat the stigma and shame associated with suicide.
Background Statement Our organization got its non-profit status in July of 2006. We had been affiliated with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by hosting an annual walk for them for three years. Unfortunately, several of us felt that all we were accomplishing was being a fundraising vehicle for a national organization. We began thinking about what we could do locally that would benefit the greater Kansas City area both on the Missouri and Kansas side. That really was the impetus that got our group motivated to start a grassroots organization and apply for non-profit status. We wanted to focus on education, public awareness, networking with healthcare agencies, uniting survivors, and providing information to the community and give support to those who had lost a loved one to suicide. SASS feels that the public must be kept aware of the signs, symptoms, and continue to be educated about suicide. Our organization has been moving forward with a limited number of board participants and funds. We are the only local organization in our area that has dedicated itself to assisting suicide survivors on their well being, healing, offering resources, and providing a community wide walk to continue to enhance public awareness. Those who have lost a loved one to suicide are a unique group because when one loses a loved one to a disease, automobile accident, or homicide there is some closure. With suicide survivors the one person who can give us the answer to “Why” is no longer with us. Therefore, the guilt and questions plague us. Our focus is on the importance of moving forward and getting through our grief. No survivor will ever get “over it” but by offering support and care to those left with this traumatic death can help a family’s journey to healing. SASS believes that survivors can find joy and purpose in their lives after such a tragedy.
Impact Statement
SASS' accomplishments in 2016 were to continue our community walk which was definitely successful with over 400 people attending; provide a Remembrance Service for families before the holidays which we had in November with an attendance of 35 families. SASS continues to send out the quarterly newsletter. Our newsletter is now reaching over 600 households or businesses. 
  
Our goals for 2017 are as follows: continue our annual Remembrance Walk, quarterly newsletter, Remembrance Service, and our Healing Day. Another goal is to continue to expand our information to area funeral homes.  We have board member who gives out our SASS brochures at the meetings that funeral directors attend.  SASS will continue to do outreach by speaking at schools and other organizations. Many families who lose a loved one by suicide are in need of support services. SASS wants to make personal contact with each of the funeral directors and continue to develop a better relationship. We are continuing to brainstorm ideas at our monthly board meetings. Promoting our organization is a primary goal.  Suicide needs to be in front of the public to increase awareness as it is everyone's business.

SASS-MoKan has had many successes since we began. We are  networking with New Directions, and Shawnee Mission Medical Center. We have ongoing support groups in the KC area one in Independence, one in Shawnee Mission and one in North Kansas City and one in Raymore. SASS has been able to provide the support groups reading materials, information about community happenings related to suicide such as Suicide Prevention Week,  National Suicide Awareness Day, and our Healing Day. SASS members are willing to present information on suicide awareness/prevention. Past presentations have included area school districts, North Kansas City Hospital community Nurses Conference, students in the social work school from Avila College and KU presented at the Missouri Suicide Conference in Jefferson City, presented to Stephen Ministry students, students attending the  Kansas City Mo. Court Appointed School, Pathways to Hope, Kiwanis Club of Olathe, confirmation class at Beth Torah synagogue and have spoken to adolescents about depression and suicide awareness in health classes at area junior highs.We have created brochures to give to area hospitals, funeral homes, churches and synagogues, health care agencies, libraries, and other public domains. SASS also built and maintains a website. Our goal is to keep our website updated and linked to other agencies in the Kansas City area. Our quarterly newsletter provides information about suicide education, book reviews, and activities that are beneficial to survivors. In November we provided at "no charge" for survivors a community Remembrance Service.  Holidays are difficult for families so SASS felt the need to unite survivors and celebrate the memory of those we have lost by suicide.
 
Although we are very proud of our many accomplishments there are still challenges that face us. The main challenge we continue to face is the ongoing stigma related to suicide.  Due to this stigma many folks are reluctant to talk about or get educated about suicide awareness. Therefore, getting the word out about ongoing support groups in the area and that we have a speaker’s bureau is a challenge. Media support continues to be challenging. Suicide can happen to any family regardless of race, religion, or demographics. We are addressing these challenges by contacting the media about the existence of area support groups, sending information about activities related to suicide, increasing our board members, re-defining our mission and vision, working with health care personnel, and providing a yearly community walk where survivors can network with other survivors.
 
 This past year several school districts have had students take his or her life and a former Chiefs player committed a murder/suicide. SASS continues to believe in the power of education and that  suicide is and should be everyone's business.
Programs
Description Community outreach is necessary to reduce the stigma that surrounds suicide. Through education awareness we can reach a populous that is at risk such as adolescents and those who work directly with them. To offer credible materials and updated information for use we have adopted the QPR Program. This program has been developed for care givers and adolescents. Another program that we have used with adolescents is the SOS Middle School Program.

Short-Term Success After presenting to various health care participants, youth groups, college students, junior high and high school students, school personnel, we have seen through question and answer discussion that many of the myths that surround suicide have been clarified. We also give information about recognizing the signs, symptoms, and who to go to for help. Participants receive handouts and several are asked to complete a pre/post evaluation.
Long-Term Success Our ultimate goal is to reduce stigma and dispel the myths that surround suicide and increase the knowledge of suicide in the community.
Program Success Monitored By Success is being asked to present to the group again. The pre/post evaluation has measured some of our feedback as well as verbal validation. Participants are required to turn the pre-post evaluations in to the organization they represent.
Examples of Program Success Due to the commitment to be an outreach advocate for suicide awareness, I am active in Trauma Support Network. I get frequent calls to offer assistance to families who have lost a loved one to suicide. Often it is simply a phone call to see what help is needed and subsequent follow ups. I am also on the Kansas Suicide Prevention Sub-committee. I know that documentation is necessary to measure success. Sometimes though just a simple “thank you” for thinking about me”validates that what SASS is doing is definitely considered a success.
Description Support group assistance is another program focus. Through SASS we are able to support the groups by providing them with books, materials, and speakers when needed. The Shawnee Mission group meets twice a month and the Independence, North Kansas City, and Raymore groups meet once a month. A new group is forming at St. Luke's Hospital on the Plaza which will meet once a month.The groups are free and is open participation. Attendance at the support groups continues to increase. When the Shawnee Mission group began twelve years ago we had an average of five participants. We are now serving on an average of nineteen participants each time we meet. Several of our participants volunteer to facilitate the group if my husband and I are out of town.  To me this speaks highly of how the support group has helped them through their grief and shows they are now willing to act as substitute facilitators.

Short-Term Success Our support group meets twice monthly. Our attendance has grown significantly. The first year we had 3-5 attendees, the 2nd year 7-10, and currently our average is 15-20. We get calls regularly from the nursing program through KU Medical Center requesting the opportunity for students to see how our support group is run. Since our student nursing observations are increasing, we would assume the students share feedback with their instructors and other students and request for observations are repeated.
Long-Term Success Creating a new normal is our ultimate goal. Through interaction with others who have faced similar feelings helps someone new to the group. Area chaplains and therapists recommend a support group for their clientele. Our support group has been going twelve years. Many participants have referred others to our group. A group’s success is having new folks come into the group and have those who have been attending know they are able to always come back but do not participate year after year.

The first year of our support group we had 3-5 participants.  We have grown to an average of 18-24 and as high as 30 participants at times. Although we do not have a concrete evaluation I think this speaks highly of the success of our group.  In addition, we have received correspondence through regular mail or e-mail about how we have helped participants.
We did get feedback from our first Healing Day in February.  All comments were positive and many are hoping that we will offer it again.
Examples of Program Success Each year we are told by many how our support group has helped them to begin a "new normal."  Many of our participants have stayed with us to help the new participants who attend. What better way to validate success but by the participants themselves.
CEO Comments SASS is most receptive to give presentations free of charge to schools, ministry students, caregivers, and any organization that wants to educate their staff on suicide awareness and prevention. SASS' focus is on education whether it be for adolescents, college students, nursing students,seminar students or just the general public. Every opportunity that we have to give information about suicide awareness and prevention is uppermost in our focus. Education can take many looks whether it be an actual speaking presentation, educational materials consisting of booklets, videos, fact sheets, participating in a health fair or any other public venue. We believe this public forum is our opportunity to dispel the myths and stigma that surround suicide.

Experience
Bonnie Swade has been in education for the past forty years as a teacher and ten years as a school counselor.  She retired from the Olathe School District in June 2009. She received her undergraduate degree from Missouri Valley College, her graduate degree from K-State, and her counseling certification from Emporia State University. Some of Swade's community involvement activities have included a Pet & Wellness program at Children's Mercy Hospital, a volunteer for Reaching Out from Within,, past volunteer for Hospice served on many committees in the Olathe School District, serves on the Kansas subcommittee for Suicide Prevention, QPR certified instructor, and is board member of Beth Torah where she serves as vice-president.

CEO Comments SASS does not have a formal assessment so our feedback is an informal assessment. We  have increased the number of presentations on QPR and our support groups are continually adding participants as well as several inquiries per week. We are getting listed more in the local newspaper under "Support Groups and now have ads in the online and printed yellow pages. We continue to have some challenges getting media exposure but we continue to send in information that is relevant to the public.

Organization Comments Our community awareness walk is our only fundraiser. We are dependent on in kind gifts and donations to continue our goals. As mailings, printing, and other necessities continue to escalate it is always a continuing challenge to meet our budgetary goals. Our budget sheet shows a deficit for 2013. The reasons for the deficit are capital expenses of standing posters that should last us at least six years, additional QPR certifications, and website upgrades.
