Mission Statement The mission of Friends of the River-Kansas City (FOR-KC) is to celebrate the heritage and promote the development of the Kansas City riverfront. The KCRiverFest is an annual activity making that mission a reality.
Background Statement Friends of the River (FOR-KC) was incorporated in November 2002. FOR-KC is a not-for-profit organization created to promote awareness and public use of the Riverfront throughout the metropolitan area. The organization addresses a wide variety of interests including history and education; conservation; recreation and entertainment. FOR-KC works to create a more vibrant Riverfront today and a more vibrant region in the future. The KCRiverFest is FOR-KC's annual fundraising event.
Impact Statement FOR-KC is a young organization that has focused their attention on building a strong, diversified board and on marketing and communications to our members and friends. We also established partnership with other river oriented groups for events at the RiverFront. Our RiverFest event is the most recognized success of our organization. Moving forward we are working on a web site, and an expanded role in the river front development and events.
Needs Statement The FOR-KC organization is looking for funding to build out our marketing and communications to potential friends and partners. The other funding need is for the development and production of KC RiverFest, the Greater Kansas City Area's only Fourth of July event downtown.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement The greatest challenge of the FOR-KC organization is the continued growth of the organization and our friends. We are working to strengthen the board and our partnerships to achieve this goal. With this challenge comes a financial challenge related to the need to have increased friends that fund the organization.

Description
The 2012 KCRiverFest will serve as the kick-off event for a week-long celebration of Kansas City and baseball as our City welcomes local fans and visitors into Kansas City to celebrate the 4th of July and all of the MLB All-Star Baseball events.

KCRiverFest will feature a tremendous fireworks display, great music by diverse local KC and national entertainers on the main stage as well as other performance stages located throughout the park. The event will once again feature a children's entertainment area with carnival rides and games along with special performances by Radio Disney's Rockin' Road Crew.  Visitors will also enjoy a variety of festival foods, educational information about the Riverfront Heritage Trail, West End Wetlands along the Missouri River, and various retail booths in the KCRiverFest Marketplace.

We anticipate the return of the very popular addition of a full scale carnival.  The Lowery Carnival Co. will be bringing 12-15 rides with a family friendly midway full of games and fun.

In an effort to give back to the community and help families overcome the slowed economy, there will be free admission for the first 2 hours each day.  The event is open to the public and will cost $10.00 per adult and FREE for children 5 years old and under. Transportation will also be FREE from several downtown locations. There are unlimited tickets available at the gate.  Our goal is to offer an entirely free event if funding can be obtained to underwrite all expenses.

Short-Term Success Though other community events have folded or cutback, KCRiverFest continues to give Kansas City the Independence Day celebration it deserves. Despite the current economic condition this event has successfully grown year after year.
Long-Term Success The primary objective of the KCRiverFest is to provide Kansas City families as well as families from the four-state region an inexpensive premier Independence Day celebration on July 2nd & 3rd along the Missouri River.
Program Success Monitored By Our progress will be evaluated at the completion of the event. Staying within or under budget and increasing the overall experience of the event are major factors in determining our success.
Examples of Program Success Examples of KCRiverFest's continued growth and success include the addition of a third stage with a total of 23 Unique Acts that included Rock, Country, Jazz, Ragtime, and the Radio Disney Rockin Road Crew. The first annual kayak/canoe race took place in 2010 on the River in front of Berkley Park. There was a whole area focused on education and conservation with 8 separate booths, and some included interaction. The Marketplace needed an additional tent to house the increased number of vendors for 2011. A 25% increase over the previous year.
CEO Comments This year's festival will be very unique in that it will be the kick-off event for a week long celebration of baseball and Americana due to the MLB All-Star game coming to Kansas City.  This is a great opportunity and a vital event for Kansas City.  We must put on a great 4th of July Festival to showcase downtown and Kansas City as a whole.  The challenge is always funding.  This event needs the business community to help by taking ownership and assisting with the funding needed to put on a high quality event for the residents and visitors of our City.  FOR is addressing this importance by hiring a full time fundraiser and event planner.  The FOR Board of Directors are all working on the fundraising and event planning in a very active manner. The event is part of the City-Wide All Star Game Involvement Committee and we are actively working to make this a major event for the week.

CEO Comments FOR KC is very excited to have its first Executive Director.  We will be working very hard to make this a permanent and full time position.  This will allow us to better address our full mission and expand how we take our mission to the community in a broader scope.  The challenge will be to fund the position and the continued funding of the Riverfest event.
